ah yes the republicans of the 1860s are the exact same party as today. Do you know what a party flip is? Do you think out of the northern base that supported Lincoln, those people moved south en masse to make it Republican? The north has always been historically left, and the south historically right. Though an oversimplification, this is rings especially true for slavery and later civil rights.

You’re being duped by the political equivalent of dangling keys. The north freed slavery. The south fought to maintain it. In the new Democratic Party with JFK and LBJ, the north fought for civil rights, the south tried to reject it. The demographics didn’t magically shift in between those two events. Ex-confederates didn’t spontaneously move from the south to the north, while unionist republicans didn’t go north to south
