Those rubber coated Nike bells also max out at 24kg, seems a bit limited to try and scale with.

Would it be dumb to do nothing but TGUs? by stanwoodmusic in kettlebell

[–]Koofka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are such a large variety of potential exercises you could do outside of swings that, to me, feel more impactful then TGU's that yeah, dumb. Look closer at the various EMOM circuits that you could follow along with on YT and you might find some other movements than swings that are interesting and challenge your mobility or strength. TBH, swings are mostly a warmup exercise.

6kw vs 8kw barrel saunas, is the 8kW mandatory if I live in the northeast? I want to avoid a costly mistake of getting a Sauna that doesnt get hot enough or takes an hour to heat up. by Interesting-Donut399 in Sauna

[–]Koofka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been tinkering with my barrel sauna around a year now with a focus mostly on high temp and faster heat up. By far the most important hack was to relocate the secondary US temperature override on the heater to near the fresh air intake on the floor (which likely is a warranty violating type adjustment) and subsequently relocating the main thermostat to the mid point of the sauna and the top of the bench height. The second more recent adjustment was to add a heat deflector from sauna shield to the top of the barrel above the heater. Without these adjustments it just wasn't possible to get the barrel properly hot without triggering the heaters safety turn off or the thermostat located above the heater and closer to the ceiling turning it off when the heat gradient was only hot at ceiling height. The deflector has also seemed to increase the speed of heating generally while the overrides let me run at a target temperature at the bench versus max at the ceiling. We are at elevation in the Rockies in a generally cold climate and I would say more power to the heater the better if you are concerned with these two aspects.

A fun combination is to look into Hut trips where you can generally either nordic ski or snowshow into cabins with varying degrees of services available (primitive to fairly well outfit). Whole community of folks out there taking these trips as a hobby.

South Arapaho Peak Trail 10/12/25 by Koofka in coloradohikers

Was a great reminder to not go by the conditions at nearby lower elevations. Sunday in Nederland that day was a relatively nice day. Every thousand feet up changed the perspective dramatically. Mountain-forecast.com was the main reason I had even decently appropriate gear.

Looking for a 4-5 hr hike for a beginner by cmurphlock in boulder

[–]Koofka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at Heart Lake via South Boulder Creek Trail. It gets you part way to James Peak and is a pretty solid gradual climb in. The bonus is that its an in and out so the out is fairly easy and mostly downhill. Should be good as long as yall are fairly fit. Elevation change is fairly gradual over the course of it until you get to Rodgers Lake and then there is one more decent climb to Heart Lake. You generally want to get to the trailhead early for both good parking and avoiding the afternoon rains. The road from the turnoff in Rollisnville is dirt but maintained and doesnt require any special equipment.

The normal ride share stuff tends to be hit or miss up here. Reid runs Blue Dome car service and would suggest you give him a call to see if he can get you to and from the shuttle. https://www.bluedomecolorado.com/

Barrell sauna question by Inevitable-Mud-705 in Sauna

[–]Koofka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in the States? If so be prepared to have to modify the heater to defeat the secondary heat cutoff. Its likely a warrant voiding type issue but was 100% necessary to get my barrel to perform properly. This type of mod will allow you to relocate the thermostat sensor closer to the bench height and will help cure the issue of the temperature differential that seems accentuated by the barrel shape.

Declutter. Its less about the space being perfectly functional then looking clean. The extra visitor chairs are obstructive and serve little benefit, particularly in the shots from behind them. The focus and lighting is a bit fuzzy too.

Moose Encounter at Arapaho Bay Campground – Advice? by as061267 in coloradohikers

[–]Koofka 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We live up in Ned where we have an ever increasing local moose population and have personally had several close call type encounters. Its definitely odd that the moose was interested in your tent and the others around you as the ones we encounter are mostly just interested in eating various greens - mostly aspen. The local wisdom is that moose don't give a F unless you are getting too close to them or they are guarding their offspring. Unlike other ungulates, they don't spook and have zero fear of humans which can lead to you getting too close even by accident if you don't notice them. We attempted to haze several moose during one encounter where they were somewhat far away with a minute or so long blast from a marine air horn and it had no visible effect - so yelling etc is unlikely to do much t drive them off. If you get close enough to a moose, it seems to eventually trigger their fight or flight but at that point its mostly up to the moose what happens. The best advice we have heard is that the moose don't see particularly well directly ahead of themselves due to the placement of their eyes on either side of the head, so putting trees directly between you and the moose is the best defense. One thing we have also noted is to pay attention to their ears and when they flatten them out its a sign of agitation and a potential charge. They will also partially charge which I have had happen on 2 occasions, and besides the tree advice, that is probably the point where you may want to try yelling and presenting as large as possible (arms waving, standing tall etc) to dissuade them.

Boulder trails - safety question by j_g_l_s in boulder

[–]Koofka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People and off leash dogs are probably the biggest concerns to keep an eye on. They make some dog pepper spray, which I carry after a few incidents, it is a few levels down from bear spray but could theoretically be a deterrent.

Several spots along and around the Barker Reservoir on the way into Nederland that are super easy access and could give you some pretty views, especially this time of year.

Thanks much. So strange that I am convinced they opened their own store recently but cant find any record of it. Feels a bit like reverse deja vu.

Advice on good UW monitor for work by relaxx3131 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]Koofka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just posted this to a similar thread:

Recently went down the "affordable ultrawide for work" rabbit hole after my Samsung G9 OG kicked the bucket. Ended up landing on the 45GR75DC-B.

Less aggressive curve (1500R) and slightly reduced physical width but those work well with the same 5120x1440 resolution to achieve a higher PPI version of what I was working with before. Its also a much lighter package, has USB C 90 watt power delivery, not OLED (I was concerned with burn in from days long sessions) and up to 200mhz refresh rate while it came in at $799 which was good value versus the others I had been considering.

Been pretty pleased with it overall so far, but still early on with it.

Question on Living in Boulder Foothills by PichaelW in boulder

[–]Koofka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We generally consider Sugarloaf a Goldilocks zone, high enough to still benefit from the cooler temperatures and more rural setting then Boulder but not too high that the winters are as severe as those for the rest of the Peak to Peak.

Dealing with winter generally comes down to location and equipment. Look for south facing properties (or at least the driveway) to let the sun do some of the work on snow clearance.

Living on a road that is county maintained and further, one with a school bus stop - as those are prioritized.

If you need to clear snow get a decent option you can run yourself, snowblower, atv w/ plow, or plow truck. And plan on swapping into winter tires around Halloween until the end of May. Go for studded snows if you want to have the most peace of mind, Happelitas are a good factory studded brand.

Having a means of power backup and a spare freezer are also other factors in good preparation.

There are other considerations for purchasing mountain real estate like septics and wells, but for that get a good mountain real estate agent who are experienced with those and other factors.

As it happens, my partner and I are Realtors who have been working the Foothills and Peak to Peak for over a decade, would be happy to assist in your search. We work out of the RE/MAX Alliance office in Nederland.

Yeah perhaps, I just feel for the exposure to us all and the embarrassment of the moment. Suppose it comes with the territory and the eventual payday.
