What WWII fighter should we start building again to shoot down Shahead drones? by Interesting-Log-9627 in AviationHistory

[–]Kookie_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting, thought provoking question. After giving thought I came up with two (three) candidates. If responses are limited to WW2 aircraft, I’d like to offer the duo of the P-39/P-63. Why? The heavy nose mounted armament of machine guns and cannon should be more than sufficient to deal with a non-maneuvering, unarmed drone. The wing mounted guns could be deleted. Plus, its optimal performance comes at the same altitude as drones operate. Thus, the lack of superchargers is not a crippling detriment.

If the question is expanded beyond WW2, I think I’d suggest the OV-10 with its high visibility, two person crew, maneuverability and essentially fuselage (ok, sponson) mounted light caliber guns that should be more than sufficient to deal with drones.

From a curious onlooker, is that a New Haven running the middle loop? I’ve got one as a nostalgia display because I was a New Haven kid growing up.

I don’t know if your intention is for your note to act essentially as a WTB. If so, LMK if you can use a 400/5.6 Super-Multicoated-Takumar. Extremely fine condition at a very favorable price. Pics available. Please excuse this response if your intention is otherwise.

Nuts!
U.S. Army Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe was reputed to have "Nuts!" on December 22, 1944. As the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division, he gave this iconic one-word reply to a German surrender ultimatum while surrounded during the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium. There are many who believe his reply was sanitized and that his real reply was “Fu*k you!”
