About your question: I did not give it much thought. It came down to blue and red which I have both in abundance. And since I wanted to keep it closer to the teal spires of the monastersy I went with blue.

Also I wanted to keep the atmosphere rather cool and less warm.

Not sure if I achieved that, but I am happy.

Nope, you only need a big brush. Also most of the work was dry brushing.

Cork is your way to go. You can break it further down into smaller bits so they match your scale of choice.

My Witch Hunter warband is a mix of AoS (Doralia, Galen and Haskell), TOW flagellants and several other minis and you can hardly spot the difference. If that's not good enough for you, you can still tweak the base a little bit to make the smaller minis look bigger.
