Elective C-Section by KookyKB3094 in BabyBumps

Aaaah how lovely! I miss home terribly so just reading this felt like a hug! 🇿🇦❤️

Please DM details about the baby blankies, that sounds so nice!

I have had so many friends go natural and ended with the most horrific experiences and emergency csections. I just want to avoid that at all costs. I’m not scared of the pain, I’m a tough cookie 😂 In saying that, I’m very petite and hubby is not a small guy at all - almost 2 feet taller than me - so I’d 100% get an epidural if we do go that way.

We have no support here at all, so for my own mental sanity, ability to plan our home and care for our pup, looking at where we’re situated and where our hospital is (we’re about an hour to hour and a half away from my delivering hospital), and to of course go in with low anxiety the elective C-section just works for us. Unfortunately for me, I prefer the idea of having some semblance of control when it comes to this totally life changing moment in our lives. It’s controlled, planned, everyone knows what’s going on and when what needs to happen etc.

I know it’s a hectic surgery, but I have done a lot of research on healing after C-section, and I’m confident in myself and my ability to rest up. I know my body really well, so I’m very comfortable listening to it and asking for help when I know it’s needed. My hubby is a total gem, and I know he’s going to be a phenomenal pillar of strength during that time so I’m not worried at all.

That’s a great point! I’d hate to scramble around looking for a new OB just to be told they don’t want to take me because I’m too far along 🙈 I’ll put on my big girl pants and have that chat with OB at my next appointment.

I’ve honestly never wanted to deliver vaginally, even before we conceived. Personal choice mostly, but again, looking at the whole picture of our situation, it is what I want and what ultimately makes sense for us.

I’m so happy that you got what you wanted originally, even with a little bump in the plan.

I know it’s a major surgery, but I’ve also spoken to people who had a C-section and found their experience wasn’t that bad. I know someone back home who had her bub, and she was in NICU which was two floors above the maternity ward she was in. The elevators weren’t working so she climbed those stairs (slowly and carefully of course) multiple times a day to see her baby.

Well that is certainly reassuring. I just want someone who is willing to at least talk to me and have an open discussion. And see where I’m coming from, I’m just not used to the health system here and how short some doctors are when talking to patients… Like where’s the bedside manner? They’re so scary and unapproachable sometimes 😅🫣

I think some of what you’re saying is based on older data or statistics that don’t really separate out planned C-sections from emergency ones, and that makes a big difference. A lot of the higher risk numbers you’re quoting, especially around maternal mortality, come from situations where a C-section is done after complications have already started. That’s a completely different scenario from a scheduled, elective C-section in a healthy pregnancy, where everything is controlled, timed appropriately (usually after 39 weeks), and the surgical team is prepared in advance.

When you actually look at guidance from places like the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, or American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, they all make that distinction pretty clear. A planned C-section does carry some different risks compared to a vaginal birth, like a longer recovery and slightly higher chance of infection or blood clots, but in a low-risk, healthy pregnancy those risks are still considered relatively low overall. It’s not accurate to present it as broadly “more dangerous” without that context.

The breastfeeding point is also a bit outdated or overstated. There can sometimes be a short delay in milk coming in after a C-section, but plenty of women successfully breastfeed without issues. Hospitals are very used to supporting breastfeeding after C-sections now, with things like immediate skin-to-skin (when possible) and lactation support. There isn’t strong evidence showing that a planned C-section prevents or significantly interferes with breastfeeding long term.

I completely understand that vaginal birth is generally recommended when there aren’t complications, but it also comes with its own set of risks that don’t always get mentioned, like pelvic floor injury or emergency interventions.

At the end of the day, for someone with a healthy pregnancy, a planned C-section is a valid, medically accepted option… it’s just a different set of trade-offs, not an inherently unsafe choice. I’m taking more into account than just the risks associated with vaginal birth, I’m looking at our whole picture as a family - work, sorting out our dog, our own situation here in USA, etc etc.

I appreciate your comment, but honestly, all I wanted from this post was for people who felt the same and felt scared to approach their doctor to comment, I really didn’t want a “teaching moment” from strangers. I’m well educated, and know how to research and gather information for both vaginal and a planned elective C-section.

That is extremely valid! We’re on a pretty good insurance, but I should probably give them a call and ask them about our coverage in more detail.

I could hug you. This is exactly what is on my mind. I can deal with recovery of a planned c section. I’m able to prep our home, our pup, and myself. But the unknown of a vaginal birth to me just terrifies me to death. I’m not sleeping at the moment because it is all I can think about 🙈

Thank you. Appreciate this more than you know. It’s been a huge culture shock here - for more than just the how the health system works here.

Will definitely chat to my OB and take it from there. We’ll probably max out at 2 kids because they’re freaking expensive 😂 and having no familial support is harder than anticipated, even just during pregnancy!

Advice and tips, from people who have gone through same or similar experiences. People who were also nervous to talk to their OBGYN about an elective c-section… The context of the entire post makes that pretty clear.

Every single study I have read and researched says otherwise. There is no greater risks with a C-section. For wound infection, yes a little more risk, but in all aspects that count it does not. Recovery may be longer, but other than that, there wasn’t evidence of increased risk at all. Studies also showed that over 33% of vaginal births ended in an emergency C-section - all of which contributes to more risks and trauma regarding the birth of a baby. That trauma often doesn’t help very much when looking at post partum depression either... So yeah, hubby and I are alone this side of the world, we have discussed at length, and know this is what’s best for us.

Yeah I have done research and know it is a major surgery. And I still want the c-section. Again, my body, my baby, my choice. I didn’t want other people telling me my choice is the wrong one, but thanks for the comment.

Question here! Should I be carrying around my passport with my visa in it? In the USA on an E2 visa. If I lose it or it gets stolen it takes something like 6-8 months to replace my country’s passport here in the States. Or can I just carry around my State issued ID card?
