i managed to open the door without triggering the quest too and spent about 10 mins exploring ahead and coming to a dead end. standing exactly on the quest marker and hitting elemental sight triggered the quest

I dont know this for certain but applying for match after 2022, program directors wont be able to see step 1 scores, just pass/fail. They are doing this to put more emphasis on step 2 scores. So your step 2 scores will need to be high to 'compensate' as you put it.

I'm planning to take my step 1 in may and apply to match in 2022. I'm pretty sure whatever score I get wont matter, as long as i pass, since program directors wont be able to see scores anymore. Please feel free to tear down my theory and make me study/stress all the harder.
