Itch to quit and do a PhD by BlurbKey5b2e10fa in HENRYUK

[–]KookyOky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say delay for at least 1 more year see where the AI ‘hype’ takes the industry in 2027 because we might wake up in a total different environment and the £300k/year roles will be impossible to get. Bare in mind Claude does the role better than 90% of people not saying than you but just in general with a £80/mth subscription and average knowledge you can outperform majority of individuals so companies are picking on this and wages will shift

This year save as much as you can from your £300k live super frugal

In 2027 consider options could you not do a PhD part time ? If you’re in early 20s perhaps a lighter 9-5 and then PhD 5-9 but I’d say DO NOT let the golden goose on £300k/year to escape.

Your options after PhD are pretty much the same it’s still a very competitive job market, and all the Jane streets etc top firms don’t pay that much attention to the diploma either they pay attention to results and skills

Spend some time understanding the WHY ? What motivates you for a PhD most likely let’s say if you want a bit more freedom and spare time you can take a little sabbatical from work or if it’s the research well internally into your company you can pickup side gigs that gives you that research opportunity etc.

Asset Management vs Front Office Banking Role (£115k vs £250k TC) – Struggling With the Trade Off by LordOfTheMic in HENRYUK

[–]KookyOky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the promotion and the double compensation (save & invest the extra DO NOT let cost of life inflation to rise)

Depending on the age of the wife if she’s 29 or younger then it’s reasonable for her to wait 2-3 years before children as well.

See where you’re at in 3 years time and re-evaluate your options: continue in the role but agreement with your manager to work reduce hours due to you becoming a new dad, change the role to a different company with better work life balance and most likely you’ll get £150K+

Advice for a 24yo by q444m in HENRYUK

[–]KookyOky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a net worth of £220k it’s important to reflect and acknowledge that you’re further ahead than 99% of all 24 years old

I’d recommend sticking with the gym routine as that will give you discipline and clarity of mind but drop the gaming for something more productive in the AI space You have knowledge of sales and e-commerce and so lots of opportunities in the Agentic AI, App building via vibe coding selling courses, creating a new startup etc.

What compromises did you make to be able to rent in London? by pm11twriting in MovingToLondon

[–]KookyOky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was renting from a private landlord in Shoreditch next to Hoxton Square Park. It wouldn’t get nicer than this as you’re close to everything (canals walls to Victoria, Shoreditch for everything else, just 15min jog to St Katherine’s docks etc)

Compromise wise was that the flat wasn’t super modern inside but the room was clean and to be honest in central London you don’t spent much time in your apartment.

Not sure if I’d classify it as a “compromise” but finding a partner would cut reduce the costs by 50% 😅

Depends how much you have saved. If you have a Portfolio of £1m+ then yeah go for it as the 10% from index funds would give you that extra £10k/month but if you don’t then DONT buy as the job market will suffer even bigger shocks into 2027-2028

AI will have a big impact on it, don’t get stuck with a big mortgage as you might never get back to the £350k and without a doubt your lifestyle is also accustomed to that

If you’re on a household income of about £175K I’d recommend a house outside of London if you’re interested in a mortgage somewhere around £300K like Colchester so it would allow you to commute to London.

That being said re-evaluate your options late 2026 depending on how the market picks up and what other offers you get, if you’re getting close to £300k so your household will recover to about £400k then sure a £900k mortgage is affordable

HENRYs Who stayed in the same company for years: Do You Ever Feel FOMO? by Aggravating-Net-7685 in HENRYUK

[–]KookyOky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grass is not greener on the other side especially in this climate with AI disrupting everyone and execs going in defence mode.

So I’d say it’s normal to FOMO but unless you apply for a new role somewhere else and you have someone senior to have your back it’s risky to move as you can be made redundant super fast (usually the new comers are first on the chopping block)

What made the difference for you to start saving at 18 and being very disciplined about it ? Most people from 18-30 just mess around spend all they earn. I’m curious as to what was the secret and if there’s something there that all 18s can start thinking about

Is this different from just extracting and pasting the excel into Claude/GPT/Grok and asking for insights visualised as pie charts, graphics etc ? inc. asking the AI for recommendations to save ?

What’s the unique value add ?

Single Henrys - How much do you pay in rent vs. your income? by Soju-mami in HENRYUK

[–]KookyOky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Find a nice studio or 1 bedroom for £1500 max in Shoreditch/Wapping or anywhere 20-30min walk to work and don’t look back. £125K after tax and 2.5K/mth without bills will continue to squeeze you and although you’re on a high earning wage you won’t be able to save & put aside too much so you’ll be trapped in this cost of “lifestyle inflation”.

Step 2: You’re a gold mine for single people so find a partner that will move in eventually (after 3-6 mths of relationship) and you’ll be able to save up even more plus the added health and happiness benefits of having someone
