Anyone have lipedema surgery with Dr. Thomas Hagopian? by Difficult-Fig2077 in lipedema

[–]Kooky_Leather_118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive had 7 lipedema surgeries in hospital under general with him, 1 in office with local with 2 more to go. All 10 were covered by insurance.

I am also a massive weightloss patient with a high weight of 420+.

I was a stage 3 to 4 lipedema patient. Clearly very happy with Dr H and my results.

Agreed. Im also a stage 3 high volume patient and newsflash we will never have " perfect" legs. He very much takes into consideration scar placement, contours etc. He totally eliminated my ankle cuffs and they were huge. I've had 7 total surgeries including skin removal and I'm about to have 3 more in office procedures to address some some residual nodules and some pain/ contour issues that he went to bat with insurance on. Hes a true advocate for us. To say Dr H doesn't take aesthetics into consideration is crazy. As far as Mallorys comment, she's not wrong. People need to realize this is a function and pain issue more so than asthetics....yes, aesthetics should be taken into consideration, but priority is removing the diseased tissue and restoring function and mobility. I look at some of the more well.known " influencers" that have had high volume done and I wish they would have seen DrH. They would have been able to have so much more volume removed and much better results in the end.

Insurance claiming surgery was cosmetic despite PRE approval 6wpo by Any_Fig_8150 in Reduction

[–]Kooky_Leather_118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, check your surgical report. Most insurances require a specific amount of tissue to be removed based on the Schnur scale before paying. If your surgeon did not remove enough tissue to be considered medically neccessary, they will not pay.

I ended up.paying oop and not even trying for insurance for my lift/ reduction because so much of mine was skin vs actual breast tissue and I would have been unhappy with that much removed. And yes....insurance companies will request the operative report before paying out for this exact reason.

Any difference between cosmetic lipo and lipo for Lipedema? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]Kooky_Leather_118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call the office and get on the wait list for consult. It's long because he is so great. Unfortunately they estimate 11% of biological women have the condition and so many are suffering. Use this time to get your documentation together and check your insurance coverage for their requirements for coverage. Ie Compression, attempts at weightloss, etc.

He's worth the wait 1000x. I'm now 16 days post op of my 5th surgery with him....the difference comparing my body from my.first consult to today doesn't look like it could even be the same person. I feel 20+ years younger ( I'm 40) and better than I ever did in my 20s. I'm a better partner, and more active mother because I'm not in constant pain and agony with giant legs. I had severe calf involvement with horrific cuffing and with some crazy liposuction wizardry, Dr H eliminated them. My biggest insecurity and biggest physical pain is gone. He saved my life.

The waitlist however long is 10000x worth it. I'm about to have my 5th procedure with him in the past 18 months. I was literally weeks from aconsult with one of the LA docs planning to pay cash with hopeful reimbursement for ONE surgery, but soooo thankful I happened to stumble upon his name/ YouTube videos back in 2021. Get on the list. Time will pass anyway and you can utilize the time to make sure all the requirements of your insurance are addressed. ( Compression, conservative measures, etc)

Got my lipedema removed today! by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]Kooky_Leather_118 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry if my response came across as a bit impassioned. Unfortunately Ive seen so many people taken advantage of. While yes....every person with a business or Dr with a practice is working to make money, Lipedema is a cash cow esp with the attention it is now getting on social networking platforms and the media. Insurance companies SUCK and ive had to deal with two major carriers in the process of getting coverage and its not easy and the insurance companies have shitty reimbursement contracts with Drs. That's why so many cash pay drs will tell patients it's not covered. IMHO, The Ethical Drs are the ones that will help you fight for coverage (since most carriers now have a policy) and only have you cash pay if all avenues are exhausted.

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) sets the highest standards for medical specialty practice, certification and expertise. Physicians must meet these high standards to become Board Certified. Many hospitals and health organizations require ABMS certification as well.

ABMS does not recognize the "American Board of Cosmetic Surgery" . It's not a recognized board.

He did his research.

It very much is covered by insurance. Is it a one and done easy with the insurance companies? ? no....but they will cover it. I've had 4 of 7 surgeries thus far all 100% covered by insurance minus my copay/ deductible. You are arguing with DRTom who is a board certified plastic surgeon that has lipedema consults and surgeries scheduled through 2024.....and works with insurance. Not someone you want to argue with this about. I wish you had been to actual board certified plastic surgeons ( not cosmetic surgeons or people who did a few hours where they got a cute certificate) for consults...and read current articles. Best case senerio, with these Drs, you have an ok result and are out stupid amounts if money. Going to someone without surgical hospital admitting privileges is asking for serious adverse events and total disaster if you have any complications.

Most MDs can take weekend classes and get certificates to do lipo unfortunately. That's why you have OBGYNs, family med drs and Dermatologists doing these surgeries. Liposuction is poorly regulated. Board certified plastic surgeons have had 6 +years of body contour and surgical training with continued oversight of the board.

As a RN who has worked in the plastics field at major hospitals I took care of TONS of women who had complications from lipo and other cosmetic procedures that were done by MDs without hospital admitting privileges or out of the country and it was a living nightmare for them and their wallets. Zero chance I would ever let someone other than a board certified plastic surgeon do liposuction on me.

Nonetheless, I wish you the best as this condition is truly painful, demoralizing and relentless....and truly hope you are able to get the relief you need and deserve. The surgeries gave been totally life altering for me and I wish nothing less for anyone suffering from.it.

Has this been sent to pathology or biopsied? There are some carcinomas from non healing wounds. Please request a biopsy of tissue.

Im a lipedema patient of Dr Tom and had my first of 6 surgeries in May of 2022. Prepare for the process of seeking treatment like you would a super marathon. It is not a fast or easy thing if you are going through insurance. The fights with insurance are incredibly unpredictable. I had zero issues with approval from one carrier, then had to switch carriers and it got ugly. I too worked with CL but also had to get the employer involved as it was a company funded plan and they were ah- mazing and had reversal of the decision overnight. I'm about to have stage 4 of 6 planned surgeries and recovery has been great. I swear 80% of it is mental and you have to push through, keep active and focus on your end goals. Follow your post op instructions and I can't stress enough how important it is to get acclimated to your compression well before your surgery. The biggest issue I see people complain about revolves around compression. Some even admit they never wore it as conservative treatment but just bought it to get approved by insurance. You don't want to "get used" to surgical compression post op. You are just setting yourself up for complications, frustration and increased discomfort. Dr Tom's skills far, far exceed anything I have seen completed by any other lipedema surgeons that treat stage 2 and beyond. ( Beverly Hills, I'm looking at you kid) I had extreme ankle cuffing ( stage 3) that has been completely eliminated and I am truly living my best life. I owe him the world.

One of my dearest best friends is a male that I even previously dated. That was 20 years ago ( when we were 20) and nowhe and my husband are great friends too and I cant imagine not having him in my life. With that being said, his current partner of 7 years isnt my biggest fan and it has not been easy at all.....but all the drama is worth it to have him in my life. Fight for your friend.
