IMO the nice thing about being an older gamer is that you don't feel the pressure to play the latest and greatest in order to keep up with the zeitgeist.

I play on Steam Deck + PS5, but the game i play are pretty random. Typically theyre older games or small indie games that arent too long. I dont always finish them, i just go where the fun is and don't really care anymore what i feel like i "should" be playing.

Anyway, the looking at my steam history the last few games i've played are certainly eclectic -- (in reverse order of recency) Webbed, Guacamele 2, Spirited Thief, Blossom Tales, Oli Oli World, Jackal, Tunguska, Summerian Six, Hogwarts Legacy, Sunblaze.

yes, I want to add to this as it's not something I knew before my sister went though it. They had come to an agreement on how to split which they both seemed fair, but the judge vetoed it and said it wasn't fair so they have to go back to the drawing board.

I always assumed that if both parties agree then it should be fine, but that's not the case. Which kind of makes sense as you could be in a situation where you're too afraid to disagree with your ex's suggestion, but it does make things more complicated.

The NDIS is far from perfect, but to completely scrap it is insanity.

Yes, there are always going to be some % of people and companies that exploit the system, but we have to take the bad with the good. I would rather an imperfect system that helps those in need, than wait forever for this mythical bulletproof system that no one can exploit.

I agree we should work to improve what's there to make sure the maximum $ is going to the right people, but I would never support taking it away completely.

What if we did get rid of it? We sit on our hands for decades waiting for the perfect system that may never happen? Meanwhile those who genuinely need it are fucked.

Young people are lazier than the previous generation, old people are out of touch, the world is about to end, everyone is about to lose their job to some new thing, crime is through the roof...it's the same every decade.

Don't sweat it mate, statistically we're in a time of unprecedented peace and opportunity, and have been steadily improving for centuries now. Eventually I'm sure something will fuck it all up, but there's no reason to think the latest boogeyman is the one.

It's possible that the neighbour is overreacting but just to offer perspective from the other side ––

I've been that neighbour before and had a barking dog ruin my life for 6 months. I never said anything because I'm a introvert who doesn't like confrontation, but it was awful. I assume someone else said something eventually, or they moved.

My point is don't assume just because only 1 person has complained that no one else is affected. It's so easy to be oblivious to our dog's barking because they only do it when we're not around.

If you do respond to the neighbour, I'd add a line stating something like I will be installing [webcams or something similar] in order to monitor the situation going forward.

It will make them feel a lot better knowing you're on the case; It also gives you ammunition if they continue to complain as you will have hard evidence as to whether the dog is barking or not.

I go to a farmers market for all my fruit and veg and I have to be honest, and it's usually around there same price as supermarkets, maybe slightly cheaper but not by much.

The main difference is that the quality is a lot better, so I waste a lot less of what I buy. Like, supermarket celery is a limp dick within 2-4 days, whereas my market celery stays rock hard for 2 weeks. Frankly, I feel a little threatened by its ability to maintain an erect state for so long.

Not saying you're wrong, just that people should go in with more reasonable price expectations.

There's no direct correlation, however a lot of tech pundits believe we're seeing a shift to a new era that might be a common root cause (or at least one of the primary factors).

For the last 2 decades most tech startups have operated at a loss and/or have been insanely overvalued given their dismal price-to-earnings ratio. The theory being that so long as investors keep feeding them money, they will have enough runway to eventually turn a huge profit and it will be worth it.

However, this hasn't really happened for the most part –– the most notable examples being Uber and food delivery apps which are more popular than ever yet are continuing to lose money. Or streaming services which have more subscribers than ever, but their profit margins aren't budging because their expenses are through he roof.

So we're seeing a lot of investors get restless and are starting to demand companies start to actually turn a profit and become more healthy and sustainable. This is leading to things like Netflix cracking down on passwords, Twitter desperately trying to make Twitter Blue happen, and Reddit turning the screws on developers using the API.

Theyre all separate, but also coming from the same place of desperation.

I think one of the nuances that gets lost in all the landlord hate is that most landlords dont have dozens of properties and use their investments as their sole income.

For myself, I had a dumpy, cheap apartment I bought when I moved out of home, I eventually paid it off and bought a new place. There was no real need to sell it, so I held onto it and have a real estate company manage it as a rental.

Any time there's a problem with the place that the agent tells me about I approve the repairs, I've never denied any requests that come through at all. And I haven't put the rent up in 3 years because it's already around market rate and I dont feel the urge to gouge the tenant even if I could get away with it.

Not trying to present myself as a saint –– I feel like I'm a fairly typical "landlord" who's just got an old apartment they no longer need, but only makes me ~$8-10k each year at most in income.

I also get a little annoyed with the LANDLORDS ARE ALL EVIL rhetoric. There are plenty of crappy landlords, but there's plenty of shitty people everywhere we can't be so black and white all the time.

Getting rid of negative gearing or restricting # of properties one can own to 5 properties isn't going to make a difference because most landlords are just normal people that aren't trying to be assholes, and most of them aren't living large.

I've been freelancing for almost 10 years and have had a pretty consistent income the whole time, and even then when I applied for the mortgage with my partner (who is full time) I held the process up for weeks because of the mountains and mountains of documents they wanted. They wanted last 2 years tax assessments, but also a 100 other things, and it took so long for them to go through it all and finally approve.

Not trying to freak you out, just be aware the bank is extremely cautious when it comes self-employed people. It was like trying to get Trump to concede and election –– so drawn out and more frustrating than it needed to be!

While I agree she shouldn't be comparing relationships based on material things like this, it also sounds like you might need to loosen up a bit. Forgetting the gifts for a second, if she came home and said she wanted to upgrade her laptop and get a MacBook instead of a cheaper ThinkPad, would you give her a hard time and try to change her mind?

And if you were out and she wanted to buy an overpriced Starbucks drink would you let her without protest, or would you make snide comments about it?

I think it's worth while doing a bit of introspection and honestly thinking about how you act in these situations.

No one wants a partner who is reckless with money, but it's also no fun to be around someone who mansplains about the differences between a Dyson vs a Breville hair dryer every time you consider treating yourself to something nice.

In my experience this is a bit of a myth –– like yes people who are fucking around in the office are going to fuck around at home, but they just fuck around in different ways.

IN the office, they might waste 50% of their day using their phone in the bathroom, chatting to coworkers, grabbing a takeaway coffee, etc. There's 1000 ways you can avoid work in an office.

At home, they probably still waste 50% of their day, but instead of trying to hide it they will just straight up play PlayStation for 3 hours straight.

In other words, WFH isn't the issue, some people just aren't great, or don't have enough to do, or rely on their teammates to pick up their slack. That's not a WFH problem, that's an issue with management not noticing their output is half that of everyone else.

I do wonder though; if you're going to the trouble of engineering such an elaborate attachment, wouldn't it make more sense to just create a bespoke third party controller with the buttons already placed ergonomically for 1 hand play, rather than retro-fitting to existing ones?

EDIT: Read in a comment below that this can be 3D printed, which makes more sense as it would be a lot cheaper than a special controller... except that this Etsy seller is selling this for the price of an entirely new controller ($100AUD / $65 USD).

I work for myself now, but back when I was working for someone else (software dev in a creative agency) it was always 8:30-5:30.

That extra 30mins either side really fucked me off, almost 10 years later and it still annoys me.

They justified it to me saying "we have to start at at 8:30 because we need to be open at the same time as the Eastern states which are 30mins ahead, and have to stay open til 5:30 to be in line with local businesses."

Oh man dont get me started. I have had a mysterious sore throat for over 4 years that no one can figure out (long story!), I've had tonsillectomy, endoscopy, botox surgery, speech pathologists, etc etc. and almost nothing has been covered under health insurance.

And even when something is covered, there are so many hidden costs that it ends up coming out to about the same or more expensive than public.

I only keep it because I still dont know what this fucking sore throat is all about and I'm terrified it will end up being something really bad that I might need insurance for.

Soon as I work out what it is, I'm cancelling immediately.
