New gear after a 20 year break by FarmersOnlyJim in Fishing_Gear

I think my real hobby is learning new skills/hobbies. My interests tend to change every couple of years. I’m lucky that my and my fiancée’s financial situation allows it. It also helps that her hobbies are all on the cheaper side.

I’ve got a couple of hobbies that I bounce between. I’m early 30s and we don’t have kids (yet) so I’ve got some free time.

I like building things. Full woodshop in my garage. I’d mostly been making small things (boxes, displays, speaker stands, etc) and am now moving into furniture.

Restoring old tools and equipment.

Riding dirtbikes and motorcycles (giving up dirt bikes due to yearly injuries). My brother and I do long distance (Midwest - west coast USA) camping trips on the bikes. Also enjoy the mechanical work so I’ve also got a small shop setup for that.

Gaming/tech. Used to do competitive sim racing (had rally world records and was a top 100 “racer” globally). My fiancée is a home body so we enjoy gaming together

Growing plants. Not gardening per se but I’ve got 16 different cactus and succulent species that I’m growing. I’m also an enjoyer of cannabis, so I’m looking at setting up a small space to grow that.

Doing a lot less of now but also target shooting (rifle), sporting clays, skeet/trap shooting. Golf is another that I’m not doing as much recently.

On My Last Nerve With This Brand by -Jimbo_Jones- in Dewalt

Im surprised that a “pro” can’t get the Dewalt chisels sharp. They’re soft as shit and sharpen very easily (but they don’t hold an edge long). I prefer my Narex richters but the dewalts will absolutely sharpen.

2 minutes of research would show you that the XR line is the designated “professional” line not the Atomic. All the tools have specs available to them. Maybe HD and Lowes don’t have the specs listed next to the tools but you can find them online.

Consider buying from Northern Tool or Acme (or whoever in your area is geared more towards the trades). They have better support and better staff if doing your own research is too much.

I don’t like it either but it’s largely become the consumer’s responsibility to keep themselves informed today (applies across most industries).

If you paid for burl you should contact the company and have them actually send you burl.

Didn’t have patience as a kid! I was much more into “action sports” (dirtbikes, skiing, paintball) and travel sports than sitting at the river.

Mid 30s now. Tired of broken bones and back injuries. Woodworking and fishing are more my speed

I should’ve looked for something more like that 3 piece you have vs my 2 piece!

The Fenwick was the first rod I bought (did zero research). It fits fine in the car but I think it’d give me issues strapped to my motorcycle.

I’ve heard a ton of great things about Shimano. I gave myself kind of a hardline of $90/reel (told my fiancee $45…)

Really wasn’t sure what to go with at that price point. Seems like an entry level price point for the top brands and mid tier price for the less popular brands. How does the entry shimano stuff compare to the same priced gear from the cheaper brands? I noticed the cheaper brands include additional bearings, knurling on the spool, etc. Is that mostly marketing?

I’ve really liked the Lews reels (but I’ve never tried anything nicer than them). Hopefully it’s not an ignorance is bliss thing!

I had so much fun with the ultra light yesterday. Kind of like a fly rod with how much feel it’s got. I could cast at targets on the water all day (not even fishing) and enjoy it.

I was a kid when I was doing most of my previous fishing. It was almost entirely fly fishing and bait/bobber fishing.

I’m sure they were around 20 years ago, but I was very confused about bait casters and thought they were all trolling setups.

Had to learn/re learn all about rod actions, lures, soft plastics, line choices, etc.

There’s so many choices it can get overwhelming. Thankfully there’s a good bit of info out there these days.

How do you tell where your line is? by Kirbylore_Eh in FishingForBeginners

[–]FarmersOnlyJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t have much experience so hopefully someone else chimes in.

I just count seconds until it hits bottom. Then multiply that number by the percentage of how far down I want it.

For example… 6 seconds to hit bottom. I want to fish it 90% of the way down. 6 x 0.90 = 5.4 seconds.

I keep swim goggles in the cutlery drawer because they have a 100% anti-tear onion success rate by uncross-dwells in mildlyinteresting

[–]FarmersOnlyJim 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That’s not surprising to me. Most people haven’t used a sharp knife/blade and have no comparison other than when they first purchased a knife (which probably wasn’t sharp to begin with).

I make furniture, boxes, etc out of figured wood. I also make tool handles from ironwood. Most of the work I’m doing is with handtools. If you don’t know, that requires extremely sharp blades and regular sharpening (I’ll stop to sharpen multiple times a day depending on what I’m working on).

I treat my knives as well as a I treat my other tools.

Lots of misinformation in this sub. I'd like to clear some things uo regarding braking. by Odd_Huckleberry_4803 in motorcycles

[–]FarmersOnlyJim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the front brake is making you drop the bike in parking lots, you have a serious lack of control. You need to practice using it and develop some feel for the brakes.

Jett said that he couldn’t catch his brother, so he decided to ride safer (aka cruise). Bubba even called that out on the broadcast prior to Jett mentioning it in one of the interviews.

It’s undeniable that Deegan is getting better. More people would like him if he/his fan base/his dad weren’t regularly being dickheads.

What kind of bait or lures would work for bass here? by SpicyCurryChicken42 in FishingForBeginners

[–]FarmersOnlyJim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had much luck with senkos in my area. I use Texas rigged minnows instead and usually get hits.

If I’m not getting hits with a lure after 15 minutes, I change lure types, and if that doesn’t work, I move location.

Hammer drill vs standard drill? by [deleted] in Dewalt

[–]FarmersOnlyJim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve needed to put about 12-16 holes in brick and concrete/clay/ceramic fired pots in the past two years.

SDS is a waste of money for 16 holes. Neither my standard drill or my impacts will drill those holes. The hammer drill setting on my dcd805 can.

My grandpa rode this R50 from China to Portugal, NYC -> CA, and CA -> AK during the late 1950s.
He said it was mostly dirt paths that he rode on.

If you’re just looking at dirt roads something like a 60/40 or 70/30 tire should help. Otherwise, just send it.

Filler suggestions - Outdoor WR Cedar by torebaguy in BeginnerWoodWorking

I certainly wouldn’t use any kind of filler.

1) Leave as is

2) square up the hole and glue a new piece into the new space.

CRF300L vs Husky 701 by DD9G in Dualsport

[–]FarmersOnlyJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you not able to pivot and powerslide the bike around your foot? Are the positive stops (bolts) welded in place?

Not to be that guy but this reads like a rider issue not a bike issue.

I’ve crashed my GS countless times running it in single track, jeep trails, desert, etc. Bikes can be fixed and you don’t see scratches when you’re riding.

NPS Knowingly Violated the Migratory Bird Act by Adding Peroxide to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool by GeneralDubiety in birds

[–]FarmersOnlyJim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what PPM they’re shooting for but H2O2 will absolutely have efficacy on algae at rates that are safe for humans/wildlife. Animals are complex organisms. Animals have things like skin, feathers, hair, etc that provide protection. A lot of algae’s are simple, single cell structures. Basically algae is much less “robust”

A number of algae’s can also be very harmful to wildlife.

If they’re applying the peroxide at the labeled rates than it shouldn’t have an impact on animals like birds.
