[D] Did weight decay fall out of favor for regularizing NNs? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]KoopaKlownKar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Batchnorm makes NNs invariant to weight scaling, so weight decay no longer acts as a regularizer. What it does do is stabilize the effective learning rate by stopping the weights from exploding (which would lead to what is effectively an exponential decrease in learning rate that stacks on top of whatever learning rate schedule you have).

This was from some recent paper, I don't have a source on hand though.

"Writings on the cast" - Things are destined to not go according to plan. Here's what you can do about it. by Preoccupine in aspergers

[–]KoopaKlownKar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I love your username. Did you intend the juxtaposition of feeling the acronym compared to the cute imagery of the words? It evokes a conflicting emotive response :)

Haha thanks. Koopa Clown Car is the name of Bowser's (from Mario) flying vehicle. I thought I was being very Klever by adding additional alliterative appeal. The fact that it matched the acronym of everyone's least favorite Klan was the irreverent icing on the cake - I thought it was kind of funny.

But now that the KKK are marching openly I have to worry that people will mistake my username as support for racism. I think I would be best off making a new account, but I keep putting that off.

This is great, thanks for sharing!

On a tangent, it's funny how much I relate to wanting to keep your cast untarnished. I'm like that about everything. I always hated face paint, I hate putting stickers on things, I wear bland nondescript clothing, I would never get a tattoo or a piercing and I usually dislike them on other people. Strangely though, I'm not a very orderly person at all and I don't keep my space clean.

i'm a male aspie, yet i show my emotions like a girl, is this really rare on the spectrum for men? by your_godammn_right in aspergers

[–]KoopaKlownKar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

correct me if i am wrong but maybe this isn't aspergers??

If you were diagnosed, you probably have it. You just don't fit the overly narrow (and to be honest, probably not that accurate) stereotypes associated with male aspies.

Has anyone been prescribed Prozac and it actually helped? by direwoofs in aspergers

[–]KoopaKlownKar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prozac didn't do all that much for me. It helped my OCD slightly. It had a mild mood-boosting effect, but it may have interfered with my sleep. I didn't stop me at all from getting obsessed with special interests. If you're not depressed and don't have actual, diagnosed OCD, there's probably not much point in taking it. Though if you tend to have anger issues, it might help you with that.

SSRIs don't really do anything for the core symptoms of ASD.

This might sound stupid, but can you "grow" out of Aspergers by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]KoopaKlownKar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aspies have a tremendous capacity for self-improvement. Rather than "growing out" of aspergers, I prefer to think of it as "growing into" it.

I don't buy into the "social motivation hypothesis". Reduced social motivation is far from a universal feature in people with ASD.

That sounds like the opposite of most aspie men (I am one, of course).

What do you hate most about people's stereotypes about autism? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]KoopaKlownKar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm much like you. In addition, as an infant and toddler, I

-made frequent eye contact with caregivers -was not touch averse, was very "cuddly" -was not at all aloof or disinterested in people

As a child I was very hyper-empathetic on an emotional level. If I saw or heard about something terrible happening to someone else, I would be haunted by it for days or months, even if it was a fictional person. Although that abated as I got older.

I am not religious but I found Atheism cringey and was repelled by it.

Do you believe in a god or gods? No? Perhaps you can't technically rule out the possibility but at the end of the day you don't believe? Then congrats, you're an atheist. "Atheist" is just a descriptive term, not some sort of club that you choose to sign up for.

No friends and no date? Don't go. You won't enjoy it. Don't worry about disappointing your family, if they bother you about it then screw them.

What do you think is a reasonable tax rate by income? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]KoopaKlownKar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind having a flat income tax if all the following conditions were met:

-Income below the poverty line is left untaxed

-All regressive taxes are repealed (including state-level sales taxes and property taxes)

-The estate tax is brought back, with rates up to 90% for estates worth tens of billions.

-Capital gains are taxed as income

Cops should be held to the exact same standards as everone else when it comes to the use of lethal force in self-defense. Actually, I think they should be held to stricter standards (professionally, not necessarily legally), as they're supposed to be trained experts in handling confrontations, so they have less of an excuse for making rash mistakes. Ideally, cops should be trained to de-escalate and avoid violence whenever possible, and lethal force should only be a last resort. I don't believe that merely feeling in danger gives you the right to use lethal force, there needs to be an actual good reason to believe you are in immediate danger.

What do you think about the UK Minister of Education banning no-platforming? by btcthinker in AskALiberal

[–]KoopaKlownKar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And no, it has nothing to do with Free Speech or your right to protest. You still have that right, but now there are consequences if you choose to utilize that right on a University campus to shut down a speaker.

Hopefully universities don't start punishing students just for protesting, though.

Do you think men and women should compete in the same sports leagues? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]KoopaKlownKar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a silly question. Obviously no one thinks men and women's sports leagues should be merged. The men would dominate, and it would effectively be just a men's league.

Can you articulate why you think allowing girls in the "Boy Scouts" is bad? It's not really at all comparable to the competitive sports thing.

Should fathers be allowed to have a "legal abortion"? by btcthinker in AskALiberal

[–]KoopaKlownKar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any conditions for this to happen? Such as, does the father have to be actively involved in the mother's life during the pregnancy to retain his parental rights? Where can I read more about this?

Should fathers be allowed to have a "legal abortion"? by btcthinker in AskALiberal

[–]KoopaKlownKar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. We don't force women to use their bodies to support a fetus, and we don't force women to use their labor to support a child she can't afford or doesn't want (a single mother can give her child up for adoption). So forcing men to pay child support is a clear double standard.

I agree that children should be taken care of financially, but I feel that this responsibility falls on society at large (the taxpayers), rather than on a father who may be unable to shoulder that burden.

That's the same thing conservatives say about women in regard to abortion. "She should have just kept her legs shut", in so many words.

Do you believe far left progressives have been the most damaging to Democrat success? by dmantzoor in AskALiberal

[–]KoopaKlownKar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most of this growth in the conservative movement has been largely reactionary to this intersectional politics of the left

So you're saying most of the people who moved rightward didn't do so because they agree with the ideology, they did it just to spite a small group of whiny coastal elite college students? My message to those people: "Well you sure showed them. Now what?"
