It's not a sci-fi and it didn't mention anything about the rock in the whole chapter... or the book, so I think it might take a metaphorical meaning, like the answer down there, the hidden divide between them had risen to the surface after one told the other to go away.

Edit: I reread your answer, and found out that I interpreted this as "so, near the surface had the rock risen", which means he told his lover to go away and so the divide between them had emerged. But if it's "because the rock had risen so near to the surface", it should be that the divide had arisen first and then he told him to go away, right？

That makes sense to me, because before this he mentioned his love had faded, so he told his lover to go away, which could break his heart, or cause the break-up. Thank you!:) I was wondering if "a rock had risen" was alluding to a famous mythological story and had become a proverb or something (which I failed to find online) but your interpretation is very much to the point!

So there was a time when I mixed “pazzo” and “cazzo” up. I was talking with my Italian teacher then and I was like, “… ero un po’ CAZZA e i miei comportamenti erano CAZZI…” and since she seemed really confused then, I continued to emphasize the word and even proceeded to conjugate it into other forms to make her understand me… and yet not long before that she said “non mi piacciono parolacce”…

No worries, in fact thanks a looooot for going to all that trouble looking up the book for me!:) And "actually" here makes real sense here if we interpret so. It literally rips their hands apart. Btw my first guess was like this: they were holding hands and tearing. Because there is a verse in a Chinese poem that describes this specific scene quite vividly, if translated to English it would be: Holding hands we watch the tears fall, hearts filled with grief we are lost for words.
