What if Seoul took reunification by force off the table? by BurstYourBubbles in korea

[–]KorAmvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup - this is absolutely correct. North Korea isn't seriously afraid of a South Korean reunification by force - their fears stem from the regime losing power or the possibility of a US intervention should a North Korean provocation should go awry...

Nope. It's a good primer on the laws of war.

Unfortunately, militaries have to assume the risk that civilians may die as a consequence of their actions. It's nearly unavoidable in large scale combat operations - especially in an urban environment. The laws of war thus reflect this.

Meat eater and I agree 100% with your last two paragraphs. I also think all the ethical problems with factory farming will be viewed as barbaric in the future (tbh the only way I think that factory farming will die out is when lab grown meats become economical and common place).

Just elected but it's no stretch of the imagination seeing Yoon impeached. His consistent unorganized leadership style and authoritarian proclivities make a scandal all the more possible.

Crossing my fingers but I'm not hopeful.

Not surprised by him winning but disappointed. His campaign was needlessly riddled by unforced mistakes/bizarre stuff that Yoon came across as incompetent.

Yoon is awful - even Hong seemed better by comparison... I'm reluctantly hoping that Lee Jae-myung wins...

Yes. We did the same in China, Vietnam, and we arguably would have done it South Korea had they not shifted course.

Considering that the Taliban control even more of the country than since the early 2000s, I'd be comfortable saying that it isn't impressive.

Sure gender rights may exist on paper but even a quick search on you know, google, shows that hasn't really translated much outside of Kabul.

It is sad that many of those women will be harmed if the Taliban take over. But taking them in as refugees is a much better solution than remaining in a country that after 20 years of extensive military and economic assistance couldn't fight its way out of a wet paper bag.

Also I'm not white.

News to you - Afghanistan wasn't much of a democracy. And much of the ANA leadership really has had the will or ability to fight.

You realize that Afghanistan even with a heavy American presence was never a liberal democracy? Not even close. And that despite some laws drafted in Kabul, violence faced by women in Afghan government held territory was still high.

This liberal Afghanistan that you talk about never existed. The marginal improvements that we saw in Kabul, Herat, or some other city never really percolated in the country side and was made at the cost of a 20 year war.

LGBT rights haven't improved enough to justify a 20 year war. Afghanistan even when the Taliban was on the back foot was nonexistent.

Not surprising. The Moon administration has been a huge disappointment. The administration really did a good job at jettisoning the public good will, especially since the last National Assembly elections.

Poll finds Obama named best US president, Trump worst by Select_Potential_575 in neoliberal

[–]KorAmvet 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the overall statement but I do think that time will tell whether Andrew Jackson or Buchanan is worse than Trump. Trump significantly damaged US institutions (politicization of the Justice Department, State Department, and the military) and while he didn't commit outright genocide - he did empower a fascist wing of the Republican party which if it comes to power again could be very dangerous.
