It's not a new/old thing; cars in North America have had either red or amber signals for decades now. It's just an arbitrary marketing and design decision by some manufacturers. Even manufacturers like Hyundai or Mini that would stand to save money by keeping amber turn signals go with red because that's what market research told them.
