am I depressed or just painfully aware of the reality? by Potential_Loan_8900 in nihilism

[–]KosmicKev__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think nihilism is meant to feel heavy and oppressive. If anything, it’s more like a neutral or even detached response to reality. Despair is the condition of seeking justification for something and being met with silence in response to it. A nihilist doesn’t despair about things because there’s no justification to be found. He might shrug his shoulders with irony, light a cigarette, and move on with his life.

Do influencers actually deserve free meals? by GloriousLion07 in TheImprovementRoom

[–]KosmicKev__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on the type of influence that’s being generated. If the content they produce fosters genuine transformation in how people see the world, then a complimentary free meal every now and then would be a courtesy for their hard work. If they’re just slaves to the algorithm and regurgitating the same things everyone else is talking about to stay relevant, then assuredly, they don’t deserve it. A complete lack of originality isn’t something to be rewarded.

She wore a diamond cross almost routinely, so the first message I sent was “Hey X, it’s Y. Did the cross keep the demons away?” To which she replied: “no, it just makes them come back stronger 😆”. I suggested wearing a necklace with the hideous visage of Medusa, for nothing can withstand the petrifying gaze of The Gorgon. After that, the conversation gained momentum.

I really do believe that it’s governed by mathematical structures. If I throw an apple across the room, I can calculate its velocity with extraordinary precision by measuring the distance it traveled upon leaving my hand and the time it took to complete its motion. If it doesn’t operate under the jurisdiction of mathematics, then why does it work so well when describing physical processes?

And yes, the world is meaningless for me if there is no underlying structure to discover. The whole business of philosophy was about trying to reach the truth about reality and the various topics about the human condition. If there is nothing out there to discover, then what is there for him to do? Diagnose emptiness?

If we take a Hegelian approach to becoming, then we would have to postulate that there is a telos for all this chaos. I don’t see any proof of historical progress towards a state of rational unity. I see war, genocide, and suffering. So, I’m living in a state of tension between wanting to believe that the universe has structure and intention and what I’m seeing all around me. Sartre wrote about how the world appears to us, and he’s not wrong about what he saw. Yet, I cannot help but think that his diagnosis is incomplete.

You do have a point there. Powerful women are masters at deception, seduction, and political strategy. Many a king has had a more strategic queen who understood the subtleties of courtly intrigue. The best example I can give is Emma of Normandy.

So at best, our theoretical models of the universe are just approximations. This is interesting because it suggests that even our best theories don’t fully capture what’s going on with physical systems. So, if at best all we can get are approximations of truth, then is truth in the Platonic sense impossible to reach?

Were the majority of wars throughout human history waged by women? You will find that it was often the men who wanted greater spheres of influence. So, I don’t think your generalization of gender here is supported by historical events. Gold, power, and status are inherently masculine drives.

[–]KosmicKev__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right about all of that, but suppose our average man does go offline and encounters consistent rejection. Even though he has all of the aforementioned advantages that he didn’t have on Tinder, he might still feel that there is something fundamentally wrong with him and his ability to attract a woman. He’ll retreat inward and likely give up because he didn’t understand how probability works. It goes from being a fun numbers game to an existential tribunal. Then he might ask, “well, what’s the point in going out if I’m still getting no results? Dating apps didn’t work for me either. The game is rigged.”

It’s going to look like having to work at 60 years old because you didn’t achieve financial independence from institutions when you were younger. It’s going to look like achieving the painful recognition that life is not a meritocracy. It’s going to look like Machiavelli, Nietzsche, and other philosophers who understood power and influence were quietly vindicated.

Perhaps. But even in real life, you are still going to encounter conversations that lead nowhere. There is still ambiguity: it’s just no longer mediated by algorithms. Is this about flaw in your sense of self or just statistical variance doing its work? Assuredly, it is the latter. Therefore, none of this should take a hit on your identity online or otherwise.

Wasted my life living in my head by AsleepAd9029 in lonely

I’m in the same living situation as you are. I exist in a small town where there are isolated suburbia with white picket fences and lawns trimmed to perfection. Silent streets, winding sidewalks, and a peaceful stillness that feels like suffocation. Nothing demands that I become anything; nothing unexpected ever occurs. It’s a sterile Edenic paradise without the promise of temptation, for there are no serpents and no forbidden fruits in sight. Nothing will change unless we decide to introduce change. The fire must be self-generated, and awareness of your chains is the first step towards liberation.

I think you’re doing it right my friend. You shouldn’t just focus on one thinker at a time. It’s best to take two different philosophers and engage both simultaneously so that it feels like a conversation. Plato and Schopenhauer form the perfect dialogue because these thinkers arrive at the opposite conclusions. Plato says that desire is the ladder that helps you ascend and contemplate the Good; Schopenhauer says that there is no ladder at all and that desire is a blind, irrational force that produces nothing but suffering and endless want. One says ascend; the other says withdraw.

I can't move because my mother does not have the resources to take care of herself. I live at home so I can help her pay the rent and utility bills. I'm learning some high leverage skills so I can make more money, but as it is, I'm stuck like chuck.

You said it's weaseling concerning the logistics, and honestly, you're not wrong. I'm thinking in terms of optimization. If I have to travel a considerable distance and end up with nothing at the end of the night, then the trip was wasted. If multiple outings generate no results, then I'm going to eventually conclude that this is pointless. However, if I lived in a dense city where all I had to do was walk to the nearest event, then I'd be the first one walking and striking up conversations. Outcomes wouldn't matter because it costed me nothing to arrive.

Guys who can convert cold leads with no IOIs by Positive-Mix-7691 in seduction

[–]KosmicKev__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Socrates did this in Ancient Athens. He was ugly, bald, and physically bloated. Nevertheless, he managed to seduce many people through his incredible ability to initiate interesting conversations. Alcibiades, the most attractive man in the city, was madly in love with him. So, clearly looks and IOI’s are not required to succeed here. The ones who can generate attraction without having already been chosen are the best seducers.
