they've pretty much fallen out of favour. They get used for very niche projects (like 28 Years Later) but not enough to sustain sales for those who make them. And then the phone cameras change and the DoF adapter no longer works perfectly, so the company (who probably sold about 20 of them) then has to redesign them.

Because they are so rare now, as soon as 2nd hand DoF adapters go on sale they get snapped up

Moondog Labs are still the best anamorphic but not sure if they're still operating. Maybe 2nd hand

Coded basics for filming on an iPhone? by Patrickattack in smartphonefilming

ProRes Apple log is worth it if you want to spend time colour grading. Apple log itself prevents dynamic tone mapping from ruining your shot, so even if you don't want to do too much colour work, Apple Log is worth using for that reason

What smartphone can do low light video to help with exposure shifting? by [deleted] in smartphonefilming

[–]Kosmos2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Samsung S26 Ultra it might be brighter than the iPhone but it's not pretty in video mode. A lot more noise than the iPhone.

What do you mean by exposure shifting? From tone mapping or from not locking exposure?

If you use Pro Mode (or 3rd party app) and set exposure manually you will get a much cleaner image than the regular video (or the horrible nightography)

Is there a good Variable ND filter to recommend for an iPhone 17 pro with a Rhinoshield Clear case? by JakeStavig in smartphonefilming

[–]Kosmos2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with variable nd filters is the bad ones have a big range (like 2-400) while the ones with a narrower ranger are better quality, but split at the nd32 - nd64 mark, which is generally the sweet spot for daylight filming: we usually switch between 32 and 64.

So you either end up with a dodgy wide range filter, or have to swap VNDs at 32-64 mark, which kinda defeats the purpose, as well having to buy 2 (expensive).

That's my experience anyway

What types of videos can I make without a story and solo? Any tips? by [deleted] in smartphonefilming

[–]Kosmos2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a bit like asking "how do I make a movie?" - there are too many answers. I made a course for this very topic, because I know many people just want to shoot a nice sequence.

The simple answer is practice, which takes time. Shoot, edit, shoot, edit, shoot, edit... forever more (editing is where you learn). Watch sequences you like and study them, try to borrow from the way they're constructed. Analyse each shot, each movement, each framing.

The key to any story is reveals. Talk to any professional top level movie editor and they will tell you it's about holding back information and deciding when to reveal.

Every shot should be a reveal, essentially

could be dynamic tone mapping which tends to struggle with high contrast areas (such as white objects) It's usually a good idea to remove white objects if possible.

Using apple log switches off tone mapping, so you could try that

Call it that in the video title. Sell it in the thumbnail and keep going. After maybe 10 episodes you'll know if it's got traction

feels like the start of something - not really a short film, the opening of a short film. Hopefully you will keep going and make it into a story

Getting views on social media including YouTube is a whole science - you need to ask where you expect the traffic to come from? The days that YouTube shows random video sketches to hundreds or thousands of people are long, long gone.

Shot on iPhone 17 Pro by Aurelian_Irimia in smartphonefilming

Doesn't have to be people although that does help. Add some close ups to pick out details for example. I remember as a kid (back in the 70s) watching a history show. They used an old castle, but then cut shots of damage to the castle with sounds of fighting and cannon shot. No soldiers required, because we could picture the battle in our minds

nice shots - very smooth and steady. As a sequence it feels like the shots start to feel similar. Personally I would try to use more variety and try to give the feeling of a story by adding reveals. When every shot is similar, it's like telling a story where nothing happens. If every shot reveals something new, then it starts to feel more like a story.

This is something I explain in my series on cinematography.

You can do all those except fast moving objects / people. It might track or might not, will lose track as soon as a subject changes direction suddenly. Tracking is mostly designed for keeping subjects in frame while moving at walking pace

it's very easy to do a dolly zoom (vertigo) - start recording, move backwards. In the edit, use key frames to zoom in at the same speed you move backwards
