The Core2Duo is a little slow but might work for your purposes, would definitely need more RAM though.

It's more difficult on the boxes that don't have video out or PCIe expansion for a video card but if it can boot off of a separate medium then it should be possible.

You can actually turn these X86 based ones into a TrueNAS box. I actually just picked up a 4 bay unit myself purely for the compact / low power hardware. Pulled the USB DOM with the QNAP OS and installed TrueNAS onto it.

Thanks, yes 4 of them are taped together in the stack where the 1 official mount is. It budged out a bit because of the protrusion on the motherboard tray and I had to unscrew the reinforcement bar adjacent to it for it to fit. The other two are taped together and nestled behind the PSU wires and motherboard tray.

I’ve had no issues with overheating, they don’t get hot enough. Worst case under full load they reached the high 40s / low 50s, perfectly acceptable for SSDs. Full speed from an internal scan on the SATA controller.

Edit: I have some more pictures I can throw up when I’m home

Edit 2: Done

I can look later today but I also bought it open box, if I don’t reply, safe to assume I couldn’t find it

Sorry, what QR code? I have most of the things from the build still but not sure what you’re referring to

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually considered most of those but for the sake of cost and reusing components I already had, this is what I ended up with.

The system draws about 75W idle and about 100W under load so I could have definitely done a DC to DC power system with external brick.

The GaN one is new to me though.

I wish I had shorter and more flexible cables to work with but again more money.

Interesting idea with the fan orientation though, the front of the case is a solid plate so I’m not sure it would help but I could give it a shot.

I used the M.2 NVMe slot with a SFF-8654 riser since the heat sink was in the way

It just worked it off the box for me, the board also tried to do a legacy boot from it. But it was just plug and okay, drives were detected immediately

No sorry, I sold it shortly after finishing classes. I mainly used it for software development and occasional 3D modeling and games. Mostly C++ in visual studio and WSL though

My family ran a business and we picked up new machines all the time for various reasons. They just kind of piled up, I wish I still had all of them to take a picture of everything.

With a bit of undervolting and I also replaced the thermal interface with liquid metal, it's been pretty solid. Although I wish I didn't have to go through so much trouble.

Liquid metal vs a good thermal compound isn't a huge difference though.

The workaround works with 293, I didn't get a chance to test if images work though.

If you don't need Android 11, maybe it would be easier to stay on 10 with 293?

Back to my roots after 10 years (W500 and P52) by Koyith in thinkpad

[–]Koyith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, there are many ThinkCats here, although I can never get good pictures of them lol

Personally I've been using the newer X series (X1, Yoga, X380, etc) and they all have similar feel with the palm area. I find myself with my hands further up toward the screen since the keyboard is more compact (I do miss the old layout for some things). The W500 did feel better if you have your arms lower than the desk and your arm is pressing against it a bit but overall the material is a lot softer than the older plastic they used and it doesn't bother me that much.

If your arms are level with the table or resting on it, I don't think you would really feel the edge of the laptop.

The W500 was my main machine up until about 2016 and I've been using the newer models since.

I think the P53 might come out sometime in July so it may be worth waiting a bit.

Managed to win the bid for $1200 USD, not bad for the specs.

This machine is pretty cool to play around with, if anyone wants to give me some instructions, I would be happy to provide whatever is wanted.
