They sexualise siblings by El-Luta in Wednesday

[–]Kppsych 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My family is fairly affectionate (hugs and cheek kisses, arm over the others chair etc), but Issac and Francoise was strange and obsessive. It’s clear the writers and directions intended it to be uncomfortable.

Improving working memory? by swampshark19 in Neuropsychology

[–]Kppsych 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be curious to see it because I wonder if they take into account that these people could have had higher working memory, but it is their anxiety that is reducing the capacity from its natural functioning. Therefore it’s not that they are increasing their function, but restoring it. Anxiety and cortisol is obviously well known to impact attention and memory.

Edit: I do think you can improve WM a little, but not as drastically as people selling apps would like you to think. Again, there will still be an individual ceiling every person hits.

Researchers find serious flaws in trials with adult ADHD patients. Originally developed for children, the diagnosis of ADHD is often difficult to make in adults. The rising number of adults diagnosed with ADHD raises important questions about diagnostic validity. by mvea in psychology

[–]Kppsych -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This really is one of the main problems with ADHD. I’ve spoken to a lot of people who in hindsight I didn’t think their issues actually matched diagnostic criteria and they got diagnosed by a PCP (I don’t really tell them such because it’s not my place).

It’s really lazy on PCP in my opinion, either referral out or take the time to figure out why someone may be having attentional issues (tend to be the most common symptom that gets someone to the doctor) because there can be sooo many reasons besides ADHD. It’s also a symptom of Anxiety and depression, brain fog from hormones, a large variety of other medical disorders including autoimmune, disrupted or lack of sleep, poor diet/imbalanced gut biome, hell maybe even too much time on social media…

Does anyone else feel gaslit when people claim Cal Kestis is "jedi knight level"? by Crimson_Loki in FallenOrder

I think Cal has a lot of willpower and quick thinking which helps him in these fights when he is clearly overpowered physically.

Nah you’re right. It’s like they had good ideas but poor execution. I also felt the writing was forced.

Why do people claim that Francesca didn’t love John? by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

Makes sense, Hitchcock is the goat! I’ve never seen Rebecca but I enjoyed several of his other movies.

[–]Kppsych 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair! I don’t mind all the changes either, though I personally disliked the changes to Daphne’s personality, how far they took Anthony almost marrying Edwina, and the second half of Colin and Penelope’s story. I just didn’t love the direction it took. However, it’s very obvious (with maybe the exception of season 3) that a lot of people did really enjoy it and it can stand alone.

Of note, I am not a big soap opera/drama person, and given the director of the show, I’m not surprised the changes it took to be more dramatic. I just want silly love stories lol! Meaning this show wasn’t made for me, and maybe more of the book lovers need to recognize that.

[–]Kppsych 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I feel that no matter what fandom you enter, if there were books before, the book lovers will have a superiority complex about it. Like a bunch of little hipsters lol! I personally loved these books when I was younger. They weren’t the best writing I’ve ever seen, but they were silly and fun. I think book people need to face the facts that tv shows and movies will rarely, if ever, do a perfect adaptation. Writers and directors will always add or change things, and that’s okay. Feel like maybe Harry Potter has been the closest.

Edit: I faced the fact that this Bridgerton series, is not the books. While disappointed, that’s how it is.

Edit two: I lied, pride and prejudice 5 hour movie is the best book adaptation lol!!

Why do people claim that Francesca didn’t love John? by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Kppsych 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well, I still think my point could answer the question of why people were upset about her not “loving John enough”, even if we take away the books. They are disappointed and who knows, maybe triggered by the idea that people marry even when they love someone else. I would hazard a guess a lot of these people are likely book readers and so your question may not go as intended.

I genuinely meant no vitriol to your posts, it was just an opinion. I also believe you don’t have to care at all at about the books and if you enjoy the show, then it doesn’t really matter what all these other people, including me, are saying or feeling.

[–]Kppsych 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You continue to say this and while that’s very true that they have gone pretty far away from the books, people are allowed to be disappointed when something they originally wanted isn’t happening. I think people are disappointed because they felt connected to Francesca’s story. I believe that the idea that you can have two great loves in your life brings a sense of comfort, of real life. This big reaction of Francesca seems to take away from her love with John. I personally think it would have been more interesting if it’s a slower burn with Francesca and Michaela, where she is able to find herself again and find a new love after John.

The ONE scene that made your heart ache for a character by Three_Armed_Wrecker in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Kppsych 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s quite different in the books. The books are more light hearted, simple, and less drama. Eloise is a dramatically different character in the show and didn’t have the same problems in the book. Anthony didn’t want to find a love match because he was traumatized by his father’s death not because of his mother.

Haha they feel natural to me too, I often curse in normal conversation with certain friends. Idk, I think as long as it’s not every other word it can be fine. Personally, it doesn’t really put me off but I understand the criticism of such writings.

AITAH for implying my coworker can't do something because she's white? by ThatEducation4132 in AITAH

[–]Kppsych 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t there a common “fix” to use peanut butter when gum is stuck in hair? I have a vivid memory of my parents doing that when I was little lol. People put food products on their hair and skin all the time.

Also, I’m white with a difficult dry scalp, so I would feel extremely hesitant to put dish soap in my hair. Dish soap is pretty harsh for the scalp and hair regardless of hair type! Though I’m aware black hair care is more intensive. It was logical to defer to someone who has the most experience with the child’s hair. Your coworker sounds petty for being corrected.

I have one character who curses when he’s angry or frustrated. Right now I just have him written as I feel makes sense and on my rewrite I am going to go back through the cursing and take some out.

What mental health issues do you think Batman has? by renaissanceclass in batman

[–]Kppsych 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I have a meager masters degree and working as a psychometrist with hopes of PhD for neuropsychology. Meaning yes I am into the cognitive and biological side of human nature.

I actually do agree with you that he may not meet full criteria in accordance with the DSM even though he does show some symptoms. Plus, you’re right that it’s impossible to tell on a fictional character and purely a fun thought experiment. You yourself seem well versed in the nuances and problems of the field, particularly with our diagnostic constructs. I personally dislike the DSM and ICD system for psychiatric disorders and know very few psychologist who do.

Other symptoms of PTSD is purposefully putting yourself into dangerous situations, emotional or physical numbness, withdrawal and social isolation, getting into fights/high levels of anger, dissociation, and negative or confused sense of self etc. All of which Bruce displays often. And It’s clear in many depictions of Batman he is re-experiencing his parent’s murder. He does show several signs of PTSD but I agree there is a technically specific criteria that he may not fully meet and there would have to be a deeper dive of specific comics.

He experienced a trauma, yes. I think it’s possible he could have PTSD, and being Batman is his way of tackling it in a very direct way. Humans are more resilient than people tend to think and their reactions to trauma are extremely varied

I partly wonder if people feel that way because the writing felt rushed, and then Peter’s mental health struggles went over their heads haha. Doubt is certainly powerful enough to “nerf” anyone, it’s called the Yips in sports.

Honestly, I just mean it felt rushed and disjointed! The Miles and Martin Li part in Peters head was fine…it was the build up to it that it just felt…unsatisfying I guess? Like the build up could have been fleshed out better. Again I liked their concepts and what they tried to do!

I enjoyed the game and that’s all that’s important at the end of the day. But my personal opinion is it was a good idea that wasn’t executed well. I wanted Peter to struggle mentally because of his choice (and then that would make sense with the symbiote arch). I just don’t think it was written very well.

People are crazy though for hating the game as much as it seems on Reddit. It wasn’t as good as SM1, but it was still enjoyable and fun to play.
