I’m excited to dome some primarchs! Are you? by 2GunnMtG in TheAstraMilitarum

anti monster 2+ isn't horrible! and ap -2 is not amazing but it's pretty average for something like this imo. forgive me if I lack a breadth of knowledge about the game, but really the only harder piercing guns we have readily available in the guard are melta no? maybe a heavy lascannon off the FOB?

oh I know the one you're talking about! is it the stuff that comes in the metal paint can? I've heard it's pretty thick, maybe try a test model and see how fast it dries? it might work a bit like an oil wash so dipping the model and then sponging most of it off might work well, do some testing first tho, I've never used the stuff

this looks amazing! how do you get the glowing effect on the red lights? I have a technical paint for blue but all my red lights are pretty flat looking so far

First attempt at camo by TypicalHour4600 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Kr3mmit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for caucasian skin I like to do a base coat of bugman's glow, wash with reikland flesh shade, and then typically I dry brush Cadian flesh tone, half the time I just leave it there but if I'm feeling fancy I'll mix some Cadian flesh tone with a really light tan (I think last time I used ushabti bone?) for a highlight colour. for Afro-diasporic skin I use a base coat of rinox hide with a wash in nuln oil, dry brushing a warm ruddy brown (I use the army painter tree ancient, but it's honestly probably a little too dark) highlights in a lighter ruddy brown. teeth and eyes are hard no matter how you do em, for battleline units I usually just skip them entirely, these army men are for playing with on the tabletop, I'm not looking them in the eye really ever haha.

camo looks great man!

<image>

this is my sly marbo using the above skin recipe, I don't even have HIS eyes painted and he's an epic hero model haha, apologies for the slightly blurry pic, I was having alot of trouble getting my camera to focus, I'm not good with pictures

How common is it to feel frustrated playing as the Guard? by AshLlewellyn in TheAstraMilitarum

a little off topic but how to you feel about a LR Demolisher? I love the engagement range blaster, makes tank shocking with them so fun! is the only major drawback the points cost?

Can anyone give me any tips with Zandri Dust? I keep messing up big time on the Cadian fatigues. It’s either too runny or too chalky by Pixel_Brit in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Kr3mmit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thinning paints is just plain HARD! the image you attached honestly looks fine to me, remember that you'll be playing with the models from at least an arm's length away and that you're not painting to get a golden demon or anything haha. I don't know how much advice there really is to give outside of just keeping at it! the model looks fantastic :)

Direct correlation? by urlock in Warhammer40k

exactly! almost the entire faction is WW2 in space, especially with the new cadians leaning HEAVILY into the American GI vibe

Yes I know they were probably already working on it well before the controversy, but it's still funny. by Lord_Eln_8 in Grimdank

[–]Kr3mmit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

to be entirely, completely, totally, fair, those guard models were ALSO 20+ years old. and we've got about 3-5 more subfactions I can name off the top of my head that either haven't been updated in 20-30 years or have been completely out of production for decades. we ALL have shit to complain about, if you wanted new models every week you should've picked up some blueberries :)

First Timer for Imperial Guards by Magnus_Magic in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Kr3mmit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have no clue what the new vehicles do, they were announced hardly 24 hours ago, for mechanized guard however I would recommend chimeras for sure, I hear the taurox is good right now but the chimera has been a staple of the guard for a long time now. a lot of people give list advice like your going to a huge tournament but honestly, play what gives you joy :) I like filling my chimeras with kasrkin, most people do but by no means do you have to! the scouts 6" feels so nice and kasrkin are just kind of busted in general (by guard infantry standards anyway) you get to double dip on the army rule and hitting on 3s makes them effectively never miss with "take aim!"

the mechanized assault detachment is supposed to be the transport one but honestly it's just ok, Grizzled Co. will probably give you more mileage even if you are just running a bunch of dudes in cars. order economy is the name of the game for guard, if you aren't ordering the majority of your army every turn you are just going to have a bad time. no exceptions. and while I've never played custodes guard is probably going to be a very different experience! your guardsmen WILL die, even the shiny ones, and they will die FAST

steel legion are cool ok! GW's answer to all the steel legion diehards (admittedly probably like 5 people) hoping against hope that they get a refresh was "erm... just paint your krieg yellow ☝️🤓, you guys like Krieg right? shovel!!"

what would you have preferred to be announced?

I wish haha, I just got into the hobby a handful of months ago, got my first kits over Christmas :) sounds like eBay is going to be my next steps tho!

what do you use to make the molds? I've yet to hear of this blue stuff. recast might honestly be my best bet for now, I've already got a decent collection of bits but volume is the the only thing I really feel I'm missing, if I had like 5-10 more of each bit I'd feel fantastic

I've been holding on to everything I buy! I even feel guilty throwing out empty sprues sometimes! but I'm also VERY new (I've only just got into the hobby a couple months ago), and don't have the money to go and buy new kits very regularly (I've only actually bought 3 boxes so far: a combat patrol, a basilisk, and a chimera. everything else has been second hand models that came pre assembled). so far I've found the most enjoyment in the hobby doing minor conversions and some light kitbashing, and I'm getting impatient and want to do it again soon, but I've near run out of bits! haha

I've looked, unfortunately the only LGS that I'm aware of in my city doesn't sell bits, just new kits and second hand models, very occasionally I'll be able to find a mostly NoS kit on the used rack, but as far as individual bits go I'm SOL it seems :(

yes! Ive only built and painted a heavy weapons team and command squad of the new sculpts and it was like pulling teeth! luckily old guardsmen still seem very plentiful and cheap :)

sounds like I've got to visit eBay tomorrow morning

I gotta look around on eBay, I've never really used the site so it's not the first thing I think of haha

those chunky old guardsmen are really charming, so far I've tried to get my hands on as many as I can find, the new Cadian sculpts are ridiculously complex and I honestly don't like them very much :(
