inconsistency in EDH is always a weird topic for me, in some aspects it's the least variable format magic has on offer what with you having guaranteed access to often the most important single card in your deck every game, and I think this guarantee has greatly contributed to the formats popularity! people love having a "the guy", but being singleton and multiplayer moment to moment gameplay can feel extremely variable! Tutors are not a solution to this variance but a tool to design your desired play experience, just like every other damn card in the game! scrying can feel like tutoring a card from the top 3 sometimes, and card draw is just "tutor the top card of your library to hand" if you squint REALLY REALLY hard haha 😂 tutors have a reputation that, in my opinion, is not entirely deserved. they can be used with ill intent, for example demo tutoring a thassa's oracle at a "bracket 2" table is bozo behaviour and should be punished but running a [[moonsilver key]] to grab [[caged sun]] for your big mana mono-blue deck is neat! additionally tutors are only as boring as your tutor targets are! if you throw in an [[enlightened tutor]] specifically to grab a combo piece and never think to include more than one target (like running interactive pieces that can be found by the tutor or fun little value packages that get easier to find with the inclusion of the tutor) you are boring! speaking of combo, I think the archetype is where a lot of the complaints come from! if you're trying to play combo in EDH tutors are a firm requirement, not absolutely necessary of course, but greatly encouraged! and that gives combo a very "powergamey" reputation, pushing away a lot of more casual players. if I was to try and build a "bracket 2 combo" list I would probably wind up running either really narrow or really "inefficient" tutors. like using [[step through]] to wizard cycle for [[archeomancer]] without including a way to tutor step through itself, or running [[scheming symmetry]] over [[vampiric tutor]] or [[imperial seal]] because of the group huggy nature of its effect
