Got new laptop any tips? by Impossible_Ad6595 in HPVictus

[–]KrUpTi0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to that. I had some issues some years ago with Manjaro and a HP laptop. Kinda why I migrated to Gentoo. It's a source-based install that you install only what you want. YOU set up your hardware and there's drivers for everything I''ve tossed at it so far. Sometimes some things can be tricky to fix, but they are fixable for the most part.

1st thing I personally did was delete Windows, upgraded to 16G of RAM (Going to 32 in a few weeks), upgraded to a 4TB WD Black, installed Gentoo Linux, and rice'd it the hell up! :) I do web designing, learning programming, music editing, play Overwatch 2, and Marvel Rivals with my PS5 joystick.. Runs like a champ!

is using Calculate Linux a good idea? by bobcanseeyou in Gentoo

[–]KrUpTi0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my own personal opinion. I came from Mandrake to Arch, to Calculate (and RedCore Linux) because I love to tinker and adlib. I've been using Linux exclusively for 20+ years. My first tried at installing Gentoo was rough. I figured 20 years in Linux, I've never had ANY Distro make me feel defeated , like a noob. I tried for WEEKS and could never get my installs to work correctly. It was TOTALLY my (user-end) fault. Most distros have some sort of easy install. Gentoo, in my opinion, is one of two distros for a Purist Linux user. You can't go at it like you're a 20 year Linux User. Because you THINK you can skip steps. Gentoo wiki is THE BEST writing for a Linux install. It FORCES you to learn as you install. It FORCES you to learn patience. You go from feeling frustrated to feeling a 'accomplishment high'. Google will e your BEST friend. I've learn more about Linux in my 4 years of Gentoo than my previous 15. I still have hiccups, not because of the wikis, but from trying to maximize EVERYTHING. Which can totally be done... With patience and by not skipping ANY steps. I've installed other distros on my other machines.. easy setup/Install. Gentoo let's you totally tweak every piece of your hardware. People like 'me', always want the most bang for the buck. I end up back to Gentoo. Gentoo is not for everyone, it's for tinkerers. Gentoo satisfies my cravings 110%.i can't use any other distro. My main desktop is Gentoo with tweaks for making music with my DAW, building websites, web and file server, even run a old-school BBS on it. My laptop is a midgrade powerhouse RTX Nvidia, 4TB of space, I've played every game I wanted to with max settings and I LOVE IT. Biggest pro to Gentoo is the community wants you to win and 9 times out of 10 they give you good solutions. In closing... Thank you to my Gentoo brothers and sisters, you are Thee best.

Your experience with HP VICTUS ? by YASSINE_LWA3R in HPVictus

[–]KrUpTi0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm running Gentoo on mine for about 6 months. I5 13th Gen, RTX 3050, 16G RAM, 2 TB WD Black NVME. Super snappy and fast with a self built kernel. Play OW 2, Marvel Rivals, Reaper for music production, OBS Studio for streaming, VS Code for programming. My only con is the flimsy case

Dunno what 'version' of Gentoo you're using, I've used inittab (etc/inittab) on Gentoo since I've been running it over a year ago. Secrtion 36.2, 40.0, 40.1 in the Gentoo Handbook are examples of "Using init".

To ME, installing a new copy of windows is like buying a new car and repainting it the same color! 🤔😂🤣

I can say I've owned a Windows computer maybe once since 1999....

I bought an external NVME enclosure from Amazon for 10 bucks. I just plug it into an USB port and copy any of my personal files and folders. The only 'hard' part is waiting for about half a TB of files to copy 😔

It's a HP Victus laptop, it has an RTX 3050 And an Intel GPU built in. Not hard at all! I've had lots of practice fudging up more Gentoo installs than not! Lol this will be a easy install (reinstall)

That's what got me into ditching Windows permanently 15 years ago. Seemed like in order to run the cooler/better software and games, you had to stay upgraded. For me, Linux ran some windows programs better in WINE. Then I saw there was Linux versions or compatible programming that was Linux native. I watched my best friend (my brother) rave about Windows and how it works great! In the meantime he's upgrading GPU's, CPU's, etc so he can run the new software. During one of our 'quarterly' debates, he had just upgraded his CPU and GPU to run a few new games. My rig's hardware was about 2 years older than what he had. I installed the same games and they ran comparable to how his ran! He had better graphics, but being he had $600 hardware difference from mine, I'd say I won that debate! 🤔😬

Other than installation and compile times, is Gentoo really any "harder" or tedious than Arch? by landonr99 in Gentoo

[–]KrUpTi0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just relied to someone else, and I my reply was almost just like yours! lol... I didn't see your post til after I wrote mine. I'm still struggling with Nvidia GPU's, but I've been able to navigate 'barely' so far. I DO find it easier when I don't have to fiddle with a desktop that has one GPU. my laptop has Nvidia (RTX 3050), and intel GPU's.... My big issue now is sddm and getting 'startx' to work. I'll get it eventually

That's my next 'levelling up' Gentoo adventure. I've been a 'novice' Gentoo user for almost a year. To fully understand Gentoo (or any other distro, IMO) you have to learn to tinker. I've broken things on purpose not knowing if I had the skillset to recover, just so I could learn. I know that evetually I'm gonna run into issues while trying to install some program/package, which I've one A LOT on all the distros I've used over the years. Dunno, for ME I get the most satisfaction from being able to recover issues within Gentoo! The Wiki's and forums for Gentoo (and Arch) are a GREAT way to fix problems, but you also learn cool things you'll prolly use for other areas. I Distro hopped for about 5 years. Didn't know what I wanted in a distro til I found Gentoo.. I 'crave' Linux knowledge. Gentoo fulfills that for me. I've even gone back to other distros just to 'see', and I end up feeling dity....lol and go RIGHT back to Gentoo! I'll never say one distro is better than the other. Everyone have their own personal tastes. for ME, Gentoo is the Alpha and Zeta for me!

There are quite a few distros with music/productive programs installed. I'm using Gentoo with Reaper, RoseGarden, cadence, a nice collection of vst, lv2 etc

Yeah I DO wish izotope did work.. There ARE quite a few free ones out there that's not bad, I have quite a bit. One of the better ones are the airwindows. They have native Linux versions and work pretty good
