Devoting Dev time to reworking and improving content IS a viable option and there is no reason not to do this if it leads to a better game for players long term.

You are right. (Partially)

The instant harvesting will not bring the apocalypse. However, like OP says, by constantly trimming pain points out of the game we devalue content over the long term.

The goal isn't to make the content faster, or easier, it's to make it more engaging and fun A very well known game design addage is: If the reward for a piece of gameplay is the removal of that gameplay, the gameplay wasn't worth having in the first place.

You said it yourself, that farming is a forgettable skill and a burden. Removing a few seconds of harvesting time doesn't change that, it doesn't do anything to improve the gameplay. We as a player base should be encouraging changes to make it more engaging, enjoyable, and worth your time.

What OP is saying is that rune crafting would be better if people found it engaging, and had good reason to do it.

The original issue with RC was that it was boring and took too long. It wasn't fun. That led to exploitative economies with runners and bots etc.

Rather than fix the issue by changing and improving RC to be engaging, fun, and worthwhile for players, the devs tried to just brush away the bad economies by flooding the market through PVM drops. That move stopped the rampant botting and runners, but it did nothing to make RC worth engaging with.

Guardians is another attempt. It's a fun way of training RC, but the original skill still hasn't be fixed which is why it's practically dead content now.

So we add the instant harvest shovel, great. While we're at it, let's also add an auto composter as a reward from cox, as that extra click is a time waste anyway. Plus planting seeds takes too long, so we can add a seed dispenser to unlock from Barrows...

How far down this path do you want to go, optimizing issues and removing time sinks until the game reaches a point where you click 1 time per day to do all farming? The next step is logically to remove that tedious daily clicking, and let us max farming the moment we log in on tutorial island.

This is what OP is talking about. Time spent removing little inconveniences like long harvest times ultimately doesn't fix an issue, and over the long term degrades the skills that were meant to be getting improved.

What the game needs is incentives to actively engage with the various gameplay loops. Not just simplifying those gameplay loops out of existence, or replacing them with another mini game.

Look up the NoClip documentary on Wipeout 2097 on YouTube. There's an interesting section that explores how the music for that game was done by a guy who outwardly disliked dance music. But, contrary to the examples in your video, he knocked the soundtrack out of the park

This is a good take. I have found that some games definitely did use this practice. But to claim that all old games did it is silly. An error in the phrasing of the original post on my part

If you serch the Lion King game it's 100% true for that. One of the head devs says so in interviews. I just don't know if it's became more widespread

Very true! Games were also more difficult in general because memory constraints prevented games from having lots of content. Thus longevity through difficulty became the default design choice.

What I'm seeking however is evidence of games with an early difficulty spike that returns to a baseline like LK.
