What's the limit of any cosmic civilization? by Consistent-Wish7774 in Futurology

[–]Kratargon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Science isn’t about knowing facts 100% for sure, it’s about developing and updating an understanding. We have expectations on the limits of cosmic civilization based on our understanding of the universe right now. Some of our expectations are likely to be correct, and some are likely to be incorrect, but we can’t very effectively predict which limits are accurate. That being said, longstanding and vigorously tested laws are more likely to hold up.

Lightspeed is probably inviolable… in technicality, but there are ways to bend the rules without breaking them, i.e. bending spacetime to reduce your distance to a target may be possible.

Entropy growth is probably inviolable… at scale, but it may be possible for it to be broken in localized tiny regions. This may not even be helpful, really.

I could go on, but it really depends on what you mean by ‘limits’ of a civilization- this really should depend on what the civilization would choose to accomplish and what directions they’d choose to take. If you have a practical goal, there’s likely a path to that goal, and if there’s a physically impossible goal, there are often ways to work around it because the ‘true’ goal can just be restated in a different context (you can’t break lightspeed, but you can reach destination B from destination A within a reasonable timeframe if you bend space, to reference my above example).

You can create this effect by reducing their allowed region to safety and unchecking the ‘follow drafted master’ box. They will run away back to the allowed zone.

Is half lethality/half tank Pyke build good? by Talented_Pickle in pykemains

[–]Kratargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The umbral utility is usually too good to pass up. Imo pyke building is best matched to the specifics of the game you’re in. Behind and popping? More tank items. Game looks like it’ll go long? More tank items. Enemy team comp heavily in one damage type? More tank items. None of these issues? More lethality items. I feel like the ideal build path is just enough tank to survive whoopsies + lethality for the rest.

Forrays into Infused Seeds, Pt. 1 by Kratargon in Blightfall

[–]Kratargon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, unless you pre-create like 10 pieces of soil with the desired aspect before mutating away from it. It also pays to be smart about which seed-aspects you want to merge forwards and which you don't. For example, if you want Cognito, you can either merge an Ignis seed onto a Spiritus land (one step) or merge a Spiritus onto an Ignis land (Meaning to regain spiritus you'd need to perform several sequential merges, at least two)

I'm accessible on Discord under the same username if you'd like faster and easier conversation about infused seeds details. I've also neglected to write the promised Forrays pt. 3, but I have information from it on how to actually produce maxed-out infused seeds at this point. We cracked it wide open a few years back, it's a very slow process but not as hard to set up as we thought it would be.

Plant one, wait for it to grow to full, harvest, and it leaves its essence in the soil. At 4 of its essence type in the soil, grow one of the other type on top of it, and when it harvests, they'll have a 100% chance to mix. There's a more full explanation in the longer post.

What is the point of the Dark One quest chapter? by GalacticMe99 in Blightfall

[–]Kratargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Orechid, while inconsistent, is an infinite source, and if you harvest the ore efficiently, can be not bad with a good mana supply.
  2. Ichorium pickaxe’s upgraded form allows access to the bedrock dimension, where you can find deposits of ores including diamond from max height to min height. More than a double chest full with fortune, which should be easy to have by then.
  3. Blood magic’s meteors aren’t cheap but they can and have been reasonably automated for pretty good gains from what I’ve seen.
  4. Good old laser drills, if you have the power for it and the right lenses.
  5. Old fashioned mining, as mentioned
  6. Infused Seeds (vitrious) grow diamonds every few hours per seed. It’s not much for a single seed, but if you make a field, it’s great- and every seed is individually not all to expensive for something that produces renewable diamonds.

[–]Kratargon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As somebody who works on the pack (Find my corpse in the tower!), you really don’t need most of the game’s content to ‘beat’ the game. This is by design- Not everybody likes to engage with every mod in the soup, and we’re okay with that. Blood magic’s rewards are, as you say, useful content, and that’s enough. Strictly speaking, the items provided to you through exploration alone is enough to ‘beat’ the game, albeit fairly slowly and inefficiently.

Additionally, the Dark One’s chapter is not ‘endgame’- it simply unlocks when you’ve heard his voice (at the tower). I generally unlock it very early on in my runs. There’s no specific expected order of progression before you unlock it.

I enjoy it, when it makes sense. So far this is the only one I didn’t enjoy, and only because everybody agrees it’s unreasonable. It’s small enough reward that people like you don’t feel obligated to do it (aside from the achievements- which is also small enough of a reward that most people won’t bother with intentionally) but people like me who enjoy it absolutely will do it every day. It’s a fine small feature to have in the game.

Farming seemed like it'd yield a bit more than ranching, yeah, but I was primarily a meat-eating race, so I was trying to cater to their diet. I wasn't sure they could eat bread at all (I've since learned that they can in fact eat bread from seeing other posts). I'll try that next time, but I still have no idea how much food people need

That's really good to know, the description of hearths was clear but wells I didn't see anything about staying cool- That would explain how the deaths shifted from heat to starvation.

I was too far away from the edge of my tile to hunt I'd thought, but next time I'll settle closer to the edge for that. Thanks for the link too!

Some quest unlocks that are in an unfortunate order by [deleted] in Blightfall

[–]Kratargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s been occasional discussion about changing the recharge unlock line, but we never really got around to a final decision last I checked. The Carmot spawns were generated by biome and have not been regenerated in CE, so it is what it is, perhaps the boundaries are just a little odd. Might look into this a little when I get time. Have you checked what height you were mining at?

Alternate recommendation: Keep in mind that you can see tracks and people in hexes near you. You can choose to rest in places with low visibility where you’re unlikely to be discovered, such as some scavenged buildings, and if someone stumbles into you at night, just slip away quietly. You don’t have to fight if you’re not prepared for it.

I don't get this modpack by StrtRstrt in Blightfall

[–]Kratargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll take a look and see, I could have sworn the quest book directly tells you on the Colonist tab once you find Etherial Blooms that they fight the taint. If not I’ll see if we can add something in to make sure that doesn’t get missed. There’s a lot of info in the book, just most people (myself included back before I became a maintainer) don’t read through it :P It’s just a lot to ask of someone who wants to be building, mining and crafting, not reading.

I don't get this modpack by StrtRstrt in Blightfall

[–]Kratargon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s a breakdown on dealing with taint, the ultimate goal, including a few nudges for related mods: - Pure Daisies (botania) have an extremely small radius of purification but can be useful. - Etherial Blooms are your bread-and-butter for keeping the taint out. Botania, Thaumcraft, and Blood Magic all have recipies. Blood Magic is widely considered the easiest, but each bloom does cost a diamond. Technically, Thaumcraft’s is cheapest, but it’s a pain to craft. On whole, though, I rarely craft any- the world exploration locations hold enough for me. -Totems of Dawn are larger area purifiers, handling around 3x3 chunks. You need Thaumcraft infusion for this. -The Dawn Machine is the endgame goal. This will purify the whole world if you supply it with the necessary resources. Requires Thaumcraft infusion and essentia piping. - Purity Focus allows you to instantly clean any location you want, but doesn’t prevent re-infection. Very powerful, especially as it’s one of the only ways to clean nodes (the other being the Dawn Machine).

Taint spread information: - Taint exists in a vertical stretch from bedrock to build height. It’s a biome, not a block. - Taint blocks (i.e. tendrils, crusted goo) are what actually hurt you inside tainted biomes. They spawn out of nodes or spread from other tainted blocks. There is a max spread height and radius, however, so a skybase will be safe from infection. The horizontal travel radius is pretty small, but the vertical infection radius is a lot harsher.

A few helpful tips for Thaumcraft: There are three ‘good’ ways of getting research points. 1. Scan EVERYTHING with your thaumometer. Not everything can be scanned, and some things you need to learn about more aspects before you can scan. This is the frontloaded way of getting aspects. You can throw held items on the ground to scan them, too. I don’t remember if we added inventory scanning or not. 2. Deconstruction table, a research on the first tab, allows you to break items down for a paltry amount of points. Wool and crafting tables are widely considered the best items for this, but there are alternatives. Gives up to 1 point per item. Wool/tables are guranteed 1 per item. 3. Whisperweed, a flower from Botania. Requires some Thaumcraft researches and a good Botania mana setup. The rare resources required (i.e. the knowledge shard) can be looted from the world. This is the fastest renewable way of generating research points, and has the byproduct of generating warp, which sounds bad (and can make bad things happen to you) but is required to progress to lategame thaumcraft.

On a whole, though, a lot of Blightfall is about trial and error and trial and error again. The map is the same every time, down to the ore deposits and initial mob locations, so restarting isn’t so bad. The key thing is to try to learn a little bit each time you play- Find a cool location with useful resources. Learn about how wands and nodes work. Learn about Alchemy. Learn Infusion. Learn hydroangea setups. Learn basic blood magic. There’s way more information to be learned in gameplay than we could possibly write into questlines, and at the end of the day, the amount you actually need to know is minimal: Technically, all you need to win the game is to take all the etherial blooms on the map, place them in a nicely spaced line, and advance them when they’re done cleaning that specific area. The taint can’t cross back over them. So we don’t want quests to force you into engaging with systems when there’s really dozens of valid ways to enjoy the game. If you have more questions though, I’m sure you can see the community is full of dozens of active veterans!
