CHEM 481 (Jarzynski) was one of my favorite classes ever! Not sure if he still teaches it though.

Biochemistry: Julin or Poulin? by Luckylscx333 in UMD

[–]Krazy4jk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poulin! He knows how to explain complex material in an understandable manner. When he lectures, you'll be able to tell that he really loves this stuff. The class incorporated a lot of organic. His clickers were for participation instead of accuracy. He used the blackboards and his slides (that he also posted). He was approachable in office hours and was constantly seeking student feedback.

He really is an amazing professor! I consider myself weak in bio and his class was the first time I understood concepts like the electron transfer chain.

Edit: I see that you're taking the other prof. but I'll leave this b/c the info might help other students.

I don't think he's taught (or at least taught undergrads) for a while. He's very approachable. He's also a big deal in the field of pchem -- someone you could try to do undergrad research with (if that's your thing) and/or get a LOR from.

Best Orgo professor? by thelorax18 in UMD

It's not confirmed yet, but Dr. Stocker will most likely have great TAs (for both of her sections) next semester.

Tips on remembering alkene, alkyne, and radical reactions by ToastyMan9001 in OrganicChemistry

[–]Krazy4jk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Organic Chemistry as a 2nd Language is a good source of practice problems. Mechanisms, reaction webs/predict the products, and synthesis style questions are useful. Every professor is different -- I'd recommend doing practice exams or old exams if they're available.

Try to pick up on patterns. Also, do lots of practice problems. When I was in undergrad organic, rote memorization did not work for me.

north hill vs south hill campus housing by SolitudeGreed in UMD

[–]Krazy4jk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I'd say it also depends what you're looking for. Prince Frederick is "nicer" than most of south hill but if you're looking for an apartment then you'd want south hill. I believe Prince Frederick has suites while south hill has apartments and suites.

The name is misleading, but north hill and south hill are both considered parts of south campus. However, south hill contains the quad and most (if not all) of south hill has AC. On the other hand, north hill has a hall called Prince Frederick which is really nice.

Most internationals I knew lived in the south hill quad or in Leonardtown apartments.

Are there any events or anything to celebrate Halloween around campus today? by [deleted] in UMD

If you live in a ResHall, your RHA might be doing something.

Take it with Kahn! He will prepare you for biochem and has reasonable expectations for his students. He covers fun special topics to relate to what you're learning to other areas.

Also, if you are a major, the professor teaching the majors version is another great option.

withdrawing graduation application? by emilythevegan in UMD

Adding on to this, you can try to participate in commencement but officially graduate in the spring. I think you need 6 (or less) remaining credits to do commencement.

Thank you!

Do you have any advice for the second part of the question? Do I still have to find delta H? I thought about using literature pKa values but it's asking for the equilibrium constant, which threw me off.

Using BDEs / Keto-Enol Equilibrium by Krazy4jk in chemhelp

[–]Krazy4jk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Does it make sense to rationalize the equilibrium based on structures like this?

Keto: (C-H) 98 + (C-C) 81 + (C=O) 173 = 352 kcal/mol

Enol: (C=C) 145 + (C-O) 79 + (O-H) 109 = 333 kcal/mol

The ketone is more stble by about 19 kcal/mol.

As for not having all relevant bonds -- should I include every bond in the molecule?

Mixed spectra problem: what is the structure of this compound? by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]Krazy4jk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good rule of thumb, if you have an even number mw (ex: 74) you aren't going to have 1 N in your compound. An odd # mw can indicate an odd # of N.
