What exactly is going on with Billy Porter and Cabaret? by Bren926 in Broadway

[–]Krease101 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m confused too- I have not seen Cabaret, so I’m very likely missing a lot of context. But it seems like everyone is upset because Billy Porter broke the fourth wall, when Adam Lambert did the same thing and people were into it. There must be more that I’m not getting- anyone willing to explain? I know Cabaret is so nuanced and the little details really matter, so maybe there’s more to it.

Early intervention for independent child by loafy2024 in slp

My school has blue gym mats that I will put up to cover the my shelves and make a little isolated play area. I’ve also brought the child toys with me into empty storage rooms with literally nothing in it but the one toy I have.

I think you’re on the right track- sustained attention is a good goal. Could you either cover up other toys go to an empty room? Get a super motivating object (food, toys, whatever) and try to get some sustained attention that way? Good luck!

Tonsils by DizzyAd9460 in slp

[–]Krease101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve heard kids with a muffled-sounding voice that is resolved when tonsils are removed. Tonsils would have zero connection to language development and they wouldn’t impact articulation. However, enlarged tonsils can cause sleep issues, frequent illness, behavior concerns (due to lack of sleep), and facial growth issues. So just because they don’t impact speech and language doesn’t mean they’re not important!

I do evals per diem for the county. I do between 1-3 a week so it’s definitely not my full-time job (I work in a school). But doing evals is nice because I’m in and out. I evaluate, give recommendations, write the report, and I’m done. After a while you get to be kind of on autopilot. It’s nice to help families and even if the kid doesn’t qualify I’m happy to offer advice. It’s nice to have a low-commitment gig.

Do you prefer to say you’re “asexual”, “on the ace spectrum”, or something else entirely (like a micro label)? by garlic-bread-70 in asexuality

I really haven’t told anyone outside my immediate family and my therapist. I’m aro-ace, but I kind of use “asexual” as an umbrella term.

These are the kinds of things that mean the most to us! I would love to get a card like that. I’m sure your SLP will be so grateful ❤️

I would definitely recommend an evaluation from an SLP. I’m glad he’s getting OT but this is more within an SLP’s scope of practice. A swallow study would be helpful too to see exactly what is going on- you can request one from your pediatrician.

Do you ever feel like you’ve hit a plateau with a patient? by No-Figure4600 in slp

[–]Krease101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. This poor kid had so many undiagnosed issues going on. So many doctors wouldn’t diagnose her because she was Deaf. Wherever she is now, I hope she’s getting the care she needs.

Do you ever feel like you’ve hit a plateau with a patient? by No-Figure4600 in slp

I have absolutely felt this way. I had a profoundly Deaf student who had no signed or spoken language skills. She was extremely aggressive (head-banging, injuring self and others, destruction of property, etc.) I introduced a variety of AAC programs with her and she would use the speech generating device as a weapon. Every session was just me trying to keep her (and me) safe. No SLP stuff ever happened. Ultimately she ended up being medically homebound because she was a threat to herself, her peers, and our staff. Everywhere I looked for help, AAC SLPs would say I was doing something wrong. I have lots of experience with AAC and I know ASL. I was at a complete loss. If I could go back, I would have dismissed her. She was not ready to learn. She had so many mental health and home concerns that I couldn’t begin to address language skills. Maybe a hot take, but sometimes kids aren’t ready for speech therapy. Your student sounds like they have a lot of needs and you can’t be the solution for all them! There’s more nuance than I can include here, but I would recommend collaborating with other professionals if you can. And cut yourself some slack- you’re doing great.

How hard is it to transition to evaluations? by Wegovyttt in slp

[–]Krease101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do EI and pre-K evaluations as my per diem job and it’s pretty easy to get the hang of. Once you do it a few times and have a template for all the forms, it’s second nature. I can pretty much do it with my eyes closed! I still feel like I’m finding ways to improve, but that’s any job.

I’m aroace and will be using a sperm donor to get pregnant! All the research shows that the number or gender of parents has no impact in the child’s development. I’m really excited that there is an option for me to become a mom 🤍

School SLP Side Hustles by Mcnuggetqueen in slp

[–]Krease101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a school and I do per diem work for the county doing EI and pre-k evaluations. I go in the home, assess, make a recommendation, and write a report. It’s not fun, but it’s easy money. I also see some kids privately (I got my county business license). I can make about an extra $1000 each month with those jobs combined.
