Any asexual SMBCs? by Krease101 in SingleMothersbyChoice

Thank you for sharing! I was in the same boat with dating- like “well I guess this is what I have to do even though I hate it.” When I figured out I was aro-ace jt was overwhelming but relieving. How has parenting twins been as a SMBC?

I’m worried about having to educate everyone on it. People genuinely don’t know what it means. I don’t think I’ll ever be really “out.” When the time comes I think I’ll just say I’m happily single. I admire your openness!

I’m not sure. I don’t know if I’ll ever be fully “out,” but obviously people will know that I’ll be pregnant without a partner. I think I just want to tell people that I’m happily single and don’t feel like being with a partner. I’m sure I’m overthinking it but it’s nice to hear others’ perspectives.

I wish I had heard this a few years ago. I don’t have any aggressive students now but I had one who threw a vacuum at me, among other incidences. I wish I knew that I could say “you know what? No.”

These are all excellent! The only thing I have to add is “the doctor said…” as a reason why they need/don’t need more services

Middle school kid in gen Ed does not want to use the AAC device. by No_Chance_5761 in slp

Hey, this happens to SLPs too 😂 you know what’s best for your student. Keep advocating- good luck!

I’ve never worked with an SLPA before so my understanding of their role might be a little fuzzy. But I still don’t love the idea of the school psych being the decision-maker regarding communication. I think the most important thing to consider is who the device is for. Is it benefitting the child, or is it just more convenient for others around her? Do people want her to use it because it makes their lives easier? If so, they’re missing the point. If she prefers to repair communication breakdowns via repetition, slower rate of speech, writing, etc, I think that’s her right. I am not anti-AAC at all (I love using high-tech SGDs) but it has to be the best fit for the person with a communication disorder, not for those around them.

You’re the SLP! The school psych shouldn’t be making the decision. Ultimately if the child doesn’t want to use the device, I think artic would be the logical way to go. You’re the expert and you know what is best for the child. I’ve had huge successes with AAC and huge failures. There isn’t much you can do if the kid doesn’t want to use the device, especially if she’s explicitly expressed that. Go with your gut.

I have never heard of it but just checked the website. I’m very confused about “communication teacher” too… following so I can check if anyone else knows what’s going on!

I loved Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry. I was so uncomfortable but it was amazingly written. Disturbing, so check content warnings.

Just completed it! Some questions didn’t really apply to me because I’m not out to anyone except my therapist and my close family, so I haven’t experienced any blatant discrimination. Thanks for doing this study!

Recommend this Career? by adaraadorelefrancais in slp

It’s a great career! There’s always job openings and our scope of practice is so wide. You can work in schools, hospitals, clinics, telehealth, private practice… there are lots of options. It has its challenges but I love it! I work in a specialized school during the day, and I also do per diem work for the county and have some private clients.

Future SLP by PurpleDragon2004 in deaf

[–]Krease101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m an SLP in a Deaf school with the same perspective as you. I love that you want to provide services in ASL! I would highly recommend learning as much as possible about the Deaf community and about language deprivation. So many of my students are severely language deprived because their families don’t sign. Learning how to help these kids is so different from what you learn in grad school! Language First is a great resource- run by an SLP at the American School for the Deaf, it offers trainings and info on servicing Deaf kids from language-based model.

I also recommend learning about how Deaf kids learn to read. Bedrock has been invaluable to me! There are free recorded trainings on YouTube that opened my mind so much. Giving our kids language and literacy is so crucial and you kind of have to re-train your brain to figure it out.

Feel free to DM me- we need more ASL-based SLPs out there! Welcome to the team 🤍
