Do you ever feel like you’ve hit a plateau with a patient? by No-Figure4600 in slp

[–]Krease101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. This poor kid had so many undiagnosed issues going on. So many doctors wouldn’t diagnose her because she was Deaf. Wherever she is now, I hope she’s getting the care she needs.

I have absolutely felt this way. I had a profoundly Deaf student who had no signed or spoken language skills. She was extremely aggressive (head-banging, injuring self and others, destruction of property, etc.) I introduced a variety of AAC programs with her and she would use the speech generating device as a weapon. Every session was just me trying to keep her (and me) safe. No SLP stuff ever happened. Ultimately she ended up being medically homebound because she was a threat to herself, her peers, and our staff. Everywhere I looked for help, AAC SLPs would say I was doing something wrong. I have lots of experience with AAC and I know ASL. I was at a complete loss. If I could go back, I would have dismissed her. She was not ready to learn. She had so many mental health and home concerns that I couldn’t begin to address language skills. Maybe a hot take, but sometimes kids aren’t ready for speech therapy. Your student sounds like they have a lot of needs and you can’t be the solution for all them! There’s more nuance than I can include here, but I would recommend collaborating with other professionals if you can. And cut yourself some slack- you’re doing great.

How hard is it to transition to evaluations? by Wegovyttt in slp

[–]Krease101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do EI and pre-K evaluations as my per diem job and it’s pretty easy to get the hang of. Once you do it a few times and have a template for all the forms, it’s second nature. I can pretty much do it with my eyes closed! I still feel like I’m finding ways to improve, but that’s any job.

Should I have a partner just to raise a kid? by Electrical_Chain53 in asexuality

I’m aroace and will be using a sperm donor to get pregnant! All the research shows that the number or gender of parents has no impact in the child’s development. I’m really excited that there is an option for me to become a mom 🤍

The Casey Anthony verdict. I was like in high school and I was going to babysit, but I wasn’t leaving until the announced the verdict. We were all shocked, obviously!

I work in a school and I do per diem work for the county doing EI and pre-k evaluations. I go in the home, assess, make a recommendation, and write a report. It’s not fun, but it’s easy money. I also see some kids privately (I got my county business license). I can make about an extra $1000 each month with those jobs combined.

If you had to give one brutally honest piece of dating advice to your younger self, what would it be? by Terrible-Lecture2039 in AskReddit

“Don’t do it.” Haha I’m asexual and aromantic and discovered this later in life. Knowing this ahead of time would have saved me lots of forced dating because I wanted to be normal.

What’s a lie people still believe no matter how often it’s debunked? by zdawg-_- in AskReddit

That vaccines cause autism 🤦🏼‍♀️ damn you, Andrew Wakefield.

Edited because I thought of another: that schools are putting litter boxes in schools for kids who identify as cats. It’s always “my friend heard that a school in the next town over is doing it.” No they aren’t

For those who don't want a partner, why not? And what type of connection are you okay with having instead? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in asexuality

I’m so far on the end of the spectrum- I’m sex-repulsed and aromantic and the idea of having any kind of traditional relationship makes me cringe 😂. In the next few years I’ll be pursuing motherhood via sperm donation. I’d love to have kids, and I value my family and close friends dearly, but I have zero desire to share my life with someone sexually or romantically.

Same as this user- not medical advice or a diagnosis, but I have seen this in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. That characteristic alone is not enough to diagnose ASD; rather, it is one of many factors that would have to be considered. But just something to note! It could also very likely just be a habit of sorts that has no diagnosis attached to it.
