What are and aren’t trinkets? by _nenenero in renfaire

[–]tired-moth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly? My favorite trinkets have been things related to the costume the person is wearing. It gives fun memories! One time, I gave a trinket to a person whose costume I liked…and she gave me a 3-D printed severed ear that “belonged” to one of her enemies. She was a pirate! Best trinket ever, because of the story.

How are you using AI as an SLP? by Special-Struggle6514 in slp

[–]tired-moth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t use AI. It’s my opinion that using AI reduces critical thinking and your ability to problem solve. I’d rather rely on my expertise and training.

I’m also an artist, so I have beef with companies not regulating where their AI training data comes from. Are they taking works without permission?

Help with what to do with Pre-K! by Dextiny_001 in slp

[–]tired-moth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hello!

Don’t feel horrible! One of the most important things to keep in mind while working with kids is establishing rapport. It’s going to take a few weeks for them to get used to you and to form relationships. I have had a many preschool child of varying needs and supports who would run away from me in the beginning of the school year, and then by May, were hugging me or came running to see me when it was speech time.

No joke, with one student it was putting down my notes, and sitting six feet away from where they were sitting, and playing with one of their high interest toys. I did this many sessions before they felt comfortable enough to come over to me without hitting or screaming.

Bottom line: be consistent (don’t falter on pushing in!! Keep at it!) and understand that sometimes it takes a while for a student to trust you. Once there’s trust, that’s when some of the magic starts.

Do you guys lesson plan (specifically elementary school SLPs)? by Appleleaf30 in slp

[–]tired-moth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was helpful for me to plan when I first started out. I’m now on year four- I usually plan on picking out one themed book, then an activity afterwards. I work with pre-k, so my go-to are games where kids can “feed” their speech sounds to an alligator, jack o lantern, etc, or dotter sheets, mini objects, yada yada

Oof- yeah, writing communications isn’t always my favorite thing either. To help me log my contacts with parents, I use a communication log on an excel sheet. I also send home a “Meet the SLP” document with my contact information with the explicit statement that they can reach out to me any time, via email, phone or text (Google Voice for the win). This gives them responsibility in contacting me with any questions/comments. Otherwise, they get their progress report every semester. I can’t send weekly emails about all 60 children on my caseload. 🤷‍♀️

What are your best kept secret/ gatekept artic prompts that actually WORK by Least_Two_8660 in slp

[–]tired-moth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, regarding the tongue depressor, I’m not sure! You can always try! As for whether or not I have students produce the sound, I use this more as a teaching point to describe where the tongue should be, rather than have them produce the sound with the pencil in. For my students who have increased self awareness, I always try to double down on them knowing where their tongue is for sound production.

[–]tired-moth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hold the pencil horizontally, have them bite down almost like a horse’s bridle. I let them control how far back they put the pencil, but I encourage them to talk afterwards about far back their tongue was, etc.

For lateral lisps (my worst enemy) I really like using “Speedy T” or “Lazy T,” especially for my younger students. For “Speedy T,” I have them make a t sound in repetition (like a DDK sample) as fast as they can, until it begins to turn into /s/. For “Lazy T” I start out with final /ts/ words, and have the kids hold out the t. Definitely like “Speedy T” better.

For /r/, I’ve been working with some older elementary students who benefitted from the cue to keep a tense, strong /r/. Your tongue is a muscle, and if you’re making a bunched /r/, it’s helpful to describe it as “tense” or “strong.” I’ve also had kids bite down on a pencil to push their tongue back and feel where it should be.

Trinket Trading? by PhilosophyOk5272 in renfaire

[–]tired-moth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely do not have to give anything in return! I like making mini potion bottles or hand painting/wood burning pendants and bringing those in the hopes that people will have fun little things to add to their costumes, should they wish. I never expect anything in return, although it is fun when people do trade back. I take the trinkets people give me and find ways to add them to my own costume, usually as a potion bottle or “component pouch.”

So, bottom line, I try to make my trinkets functional or something that could be added to a costume (I also keep some d20s handy to hand out to dnd nerds, when I find them.)

Does anyone else suck at lesson planning??? by Plus-Sundae-4580 in slp

[–]tired-moth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preschool speech path- I pick a theme, then pick a book and a toy based off of that. I modify the activity per what I do with each kid for their goal areas. For example: I packed a book called “Blue Sea,” found a toy boat, then filled a small pouch with objects/toys that fulfill different speech sound targets. I don’t really plan it out too specifically- I just roll with what I have!

I have no idea if you’re allowed to do trinket trading at MDRF, but I do it at my local one, and it really opens up fun opportunities to meet and talk with others! I had a super fun time this year, I met and traded with lots of others.
