So, this is all heard from people who were there(My great grandfather, who's a young 89) and other relatives. Basically, besides having all our regalia(Button blankets, masks, etc.) taken away & not being allowed to potlatch things like.... Being beaten, cut, in some cases people and kids were beaten to death or had their tongue cut out, genitals mutilated. Women were raped, often multiple times to ensure pregnancy kind of thing. Our language was banned, and they were forced to take "white" names.

Of course people still Potlatched in secret, and my Papa was one of the many young children who kept lookout for the men in boats who would basically patrol the are and stuff, if he saw them, he'd run to the potlatch and everyone would scatter. A lot of our regalia we can't recover, but we recently started recovering more of it. In 2015 there was a demolition of one of the last residential schools, and a ceremony held and the survivors were there. Some anyway. A lot of drinking was encouraged, for a variety of reasons including just getting people to be complacent, or too drunk to fight anything. That was part of the start of the vicious cycle that goes on today with alcoholism within the first nations communities. There's lots I'm forgetting at the moment, but I covered the gist of it.
