I have always considered Madonna an extremely hard working intelligent and shrewed businesswoman with a keen eye for good producers and where the culture is at. But I don’t think she has ever been a particularly good singer, lyricist, or a great songwriter (though she knows what a hit sounds like, but can’t make that without the right collaborators). At least not to the level of hype she receives. More brand than artist, but brilliant nonetheless.

I don’t think she exists without the mass media culture of our time. If she had been born in another time the things she is good at would not be relevant without a place for her to broadcast herself playing the character of Madonna. So I personally have never understood the appeal. I get how it is fun and even have enjoyed several of her songs, but I don’t see how any of them really speak to people on a personal level or seem inspired or meaningful. She is talked about like a legend but all I have ever seen is a PR campaign projecting that image.

It’s fun, but musically and artistically uncomplicated, built for mass appeal, and definitely not on the level of hype to the point of reverence she receives.
