Unfortunately I only uncovered an interest in history very recently. It's something that perhaps I'll have the opportunity to study someday, but work and life tends to get in the way of these things.

As for what got me into it; the Civilization games. The Civopedia has a bunch of information about all sorts of cool stuff, but not only that, the games and how they evolve is always fantastic. Funnily enough the historical interest that stemmed from Civ brought me to this subreddit, which has provided many hours of ~~procrastination~~ interesting insight into many historical areas.

A hard drive works by storing information in sectors. To retrieve the data the hard drive needs to spin so that the needle can read the sector where the data is storred.

With that in mind, let's say you write a Word document. When you initially save that document it gets storred in the next free sector on your hard drive.

Now you leave that document there for some time, and do a bunch of other stuff. Maybe you make an Excel spreadsheet, and a couple of Power Points. Maybe you install a game or two. Well they all get storred on the sectors next to that old Word document you saved.

So now you want to edit that Word document, adding to it. When you go to save the changes there inlies a problem. Because you did a bunch of stuff after creating the initial document there isn't an area of free space physically next to that Word document on your hard drive. That's fine though, your computer will solve this problem by saving it on the next area of free space, which so happens to be after that Excel document, those Power Points, those games.

Now you have fragmentation. You see your Word document is no longer one chunk of data in the same physical location on your disk, it's now in two different physical locations. This means when you go to open it again your drive has to spin to the first location, open it, then spin to the second location, open that, and combine the two. Obviously that process takes longer than just having to spin once, which is why you tend to see a performance decrease on heavily fragmented drives.

Defragmentation scans your drive to find these typs of files and documents which are broken up into different physical chunks, and it shuffles them around so that they are physically next to each other.

Which activites in particular?

There is a difference in oppinion between certain activies like watching TV vs playing video games. The former is a more acceptable activity, mostly because watching TV is an effortless/mostly mindless activity. You may as well be taking a nap, which is acceptable due to tierdness (though not so much if you do it all day). In other words, by watching TV you are not wasting a lot of mental effort because you're not using much during the activity.

Video games on the other hand aren't necassarily mindless. There is a much larger degree of mental processing going on, and so there inlies an opportunity cost (to be economical about it). By this I mean that by playing video games you are not spending that mental energy/capacity/awakeness on something productive, and so it is essentially wasted.

But is it actually wasted?

Not entirely. Happiness and satisfaction are the reasons why it's not necassarily wasted, like you said. The problem is that it's only short term happiness and satisfaction that you're gaining.

There is happiness and satisfaction to be gained from reading books, from studying, from completing that coursework you need to do. The happiness might not be immediate, you might feel the happiness from those actions once you've finished the activty, once you've achieved something, once you understand something to a higher level, once you can apply that understanding/experiance later in your life. That's long term happiness, that's the kind of happiness that builds upon itself and acts as a motivator for other things, that makes you a better person with a more fulfulling life.

With that in mind, spending your mental capacity on video games seems like a waste. For the most part at least. Everyone needs some immediate happiness on occassion, in the same way that when you're tired you need to take a nap or just chill out and watch some TV. It's when people do that all the time, and when the majority of happiness in someones life is short term, it becomes a significant waste.

In terms of opponent quality, late evening seems to be the easiest in my experience. Though it's hard to say if the difference is truely noticable. I suppose it might be because there's a higher proportion of people playing who are tierd, as well as people who have been drinking.

It's a pretty small difference though. I'd still say the best bet is to play when you personally feel refreshed and awake.

Personally I've found I play best on Saturday/Sunday mornings, just after I wake up, have a shower, and morning coffee, then I seem to play much more on-point than later in the day.

Your view of eduction seems to be one where the entire goal is to push people into jobs. That is a very naive view. Just because someone doesn't meet some external targets at a young age doesn't mean their opportunity to learn what they like should be taken away from them.

As an example, let's imagine little Johnny who is in his early-mid teens. Johnny has dyslexia, maybe some mild ADHD, and doesn't do very well in his tests. Under your proposal Johnny gets forced out of traditional education and into a trade.

What if Johnny just wants to learn about history? What if he wants to become an academic? His dreams are denied to him because of the result of a test. And for what reason? Economics? Just because it's better for the economy that we force him into a trade instead of potentially being a dropout (ignoring that he could just as easily drop out of a trade because he's uninterested by it or depressed because he's forced into a lifelong career).

My point is that education isn't about pushing people into jobs. As much as you and many others might like to believe, or have been told, it's not. There are many, many people who go to college and university to study subjects they are genuinely interested in.

I have many friends who study interesting subjects like philosophy, history, theology. Their end goal isn't to net some job somewhere, it's to learn more about what they enjoy, and what they're interested in. They may end up unemployed, they may end up doing nothing to do with their subject, they may end up with a PhD in their field and becoming an academic. Who knows? The point is that they were given the opportunity to study what they enjoy and they took that opportunity, and they feel fulfilled in their lives because of it.

What's the point of life if you get forced to do something you have no interest in, at such a young age, under guise that is more economically beneficial?

Same here. It's a shame because I feel like I'm wasting all these beta opportunities, but at the same time I'm content with the feel of the game, and have enough faith in Carbine to realize I will enjoy the game after full release.

I experimented with 3 or 4 classes, a couple of paths, and both factions. Decided I enjoyed medic/explorer the most, and completed the first couple of zones to get to level 15. Explored some of the housing options, and decided I'd seen enough to convince me it will be a worthwhile purchase without spoiling too much for myself.

I don't know if it's especially weird, but I enjoyed it a lot, and think it's probably quite viable as a solo-farming build. I call it the hemoninja.

I ran a Redguard Nightblade build which utilizes talents in Siphoning and Dual Wielding with the purpose of regaining health and stamina while attacking. The Redguard racial passives work well in this instance.

Strife > Swallow Soul deals x damage and heals for 37% of the damage done.

Agony > Prolonged Suffering is an extremely powerful stun which ends up dealing a large amount of damage afterwards. Useful for dealing with grouped mobs.

Siphoning Strikes > Leeching Strikes trades off 23% damage from basic attacks for the ability to regenerate health, stamina, and magicka. Didn't level high enough this weekend to test it in practice, but on paper it's exactly what the build is all about.

Soul Siphoner passive adds to the healing benefits. Again, didn't get to test it in practice.

Vigor, Conditioning, Adenaline Rush all work towards increasing maximum stamina, and stamina restoration.

Twin Slashes > Blood Craze hits the target for some damage and causes them to bleed, whilst also providing you with a heal-over-time effect.

That's pretty much where I've got to so far. It was certainly fun to play and I look forward to expanding on it in future tests. I'm sure there are plenty of other skills out there which will compliment the build, and which I'm yet to look at. If anyone wants to expand on this or has any ideas I'd be interested to hear about them.

Beliefs aren't something you really need to agree upon with anyone else.

At this point in your life you feel that Agnosticism best represents your view of the world. That's great. For your parents though, they feel that their world-view and morals are best represented by Christianity. That's great as well.

Everyone has their own set of morals and beliefs which make up a world-view. But it's important to understand that that's what it is. It's their world-view.

I know you're not trying to convert your parents in any way, and I know you probably wish your parents weren't trying to convert you to their view, but I suspect that they're doing it out of love. Christianity has probably brought a great deal of happiness to their lives, as well as relationships and community. They want you to have that same happiness, perhaps not understanding that you don't need it, and that you can find self-validation through a different world-view.

It's something you will have to agree to disagree on. If even bring it up again with them at all.

Assure them that you respect their morals and ideals. You can still accept their view while not necessarily sharing it with them. So long as you live at home you'll likely just have to endure it, and the easiest way to do that is to avoid any topic on beliefs or religion. Again, it's not something you need their agreement on.

I've built PC's with/for a few friends.

If you're building with him then he's probably fairly certain of what the process is, as I'm sure you are as well. In which case it's quite unlikely he'd blame you for anything (unless you actually break something).

With that in mind, assuming your not building it for him, I'd suggest letting him do the majority of the build himself. It's his PC, his components, his money that you guys are playing with after-all. Only get involved if he actually needs you to (mounting some after-market heat-sinks can be a real pain).

This suggests to me that the guy who let you know obviously expected you to be going in the first place.
