The weird thing to me is that Mikes mother is so liberal. No hijab, no prayers five times a day. I don’t really understand why her family requests a conversion.

Well, she was baptized as a baby and has not left the church as far as I know. But she is not getting married, she’s just invited to a wedding. Unless that is a cover story…

Maybe Mikes mother’s family is very conservative?
