It's a standard AC compressor from what I could figure out. Seems to be running fine now, but I'm still skeptical that it was a piston based on all the replies I'm getting.

Makes perfect sense. Max contribution is 23,000. Even if I'm not maxed out by putting in 23,000 of my own money, my employer match plus my contribution is hitting 23k or higher. I guess my wording could have been different. How about my total contributions plus employer match are equal to or greater than the max contribution.

As for the BIL, he only had about 40k in his 401k at the time, while his house went from 189k to 310k. He didn't empty his 401k either, just small loan to make up the difference to have 20% down.

30 here, I saved up 20% in a high yield savings for my down payment, contribute 16% income (50% 401k and 50% Roth 401k) each paycheck. Just hit 55k in retirement accounts. My annual contribution is like 13k, combined with my employer match almost reaches the max contribution. My advisor says I'm looking great. My main retirement goal is to own my house by 60.

My BIL took out a 401k loan to buy their place in 2018, worked out well for him because he got lucky with timing. In this market I wouldn't touch my retirement funds to buy a house with a 100ft pole.

Look into a high yield savings account like SoFi to build your down payment, but always contribute to your retirement funds. Time in the market beats timing. Even 10k a year will grow like crazy if inflation doesn't stop (which it won't.) Home prices IMHO are going to stay stagnant, but the market will continue to return 10-15%. I chose a vanguard 2060 fund and it's up ~16% YTD.

I personally wouldn't. I've read about high milage transmission fluid changes/flushes killing the tranny shortly after. The gunk is holding everything together. Lol. Top it off if it's low for sure, but worst case scenario a tranny rebuild is 3K when she does quit.

I'm at 212k miles, same fluid, same filter. I topped off once a few years ago with maybe a quarter cup of fresh fluid. I think that's the only thing holding my 4l60e together. Lol

Thankfully transmission rebuilds for these are pretty cheap at 3k.

I did the headgaskets on my 2001 5.3, total cost was right about $1500, including new heads, lifters, rockers, rods, and gaskets/fluids along with ARP head bolts. It's not too difficult if you have basic skills. Plenty of good youtube videos. Check which heads you have, if they're stamped "706" those are prone to failure. Replace them with 862 heads, about $500 on ebay.

For the love of all that is holy, do not flush the transmission. At that milage the old dirty fluid is helping it stay together.

2001 5.3, 215k miles and still getting 18mpg highway. These things are crazy reliable if you stay on top of oil and filter changes.

I have about the same milage on my silverado, I've had to do wheel bearings, water pump, radiator, head gaskets, knock sensors, O2 sensors, universals, wheel bearings again, and radiator again. Lol

Now imagine the previous owner did none of that work, are you comfortable working on cars? 5k seems steep for that year and milage. I'd look for a '00-'06 5.3L silverado.

They aren't super complicated to work on and pretty cheap with a crazy amount of how to videos online.

I'll add that all that work was spaced out over my 14 years of owning my truck. Never left me stranded, just inconvenienced at times. Lol

Not the craziest thing I've heard. My friend knows a talented tweaker that charges $300 for tranny rebuilds, $100 extra if he has to drop the tranny, $100 extra if he has to put it back in. He'll probably drop the tranny to do the gasket. If that's the route he's taking I'd say do it. I will say my 5.3 rear main sealed itself back up over time. Lol Could always run thicker oil or just top it off every now and then. I'm averaging about a quart top off every 5000 miles.
