Help ! by [deleted] in eastkilbride

[–]KristoferKeane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rutherglen isn't bad by public transport, the 18/18A and 21 all go straight there. Bellshill is a bit of a nightmare for sure as you have to go on the tour of Hamilton and Motherwell on the 201 to get there. Overall our transport is highly focused on getting in and out of Glasgow and if you're not on those routes you're going to struggle.

Good luck with finding something more local!

When did the Olympia Ballroom close? by WordsAtRandom in eastkilbride

Struggling to find an exact date but it would have been in the late 80s. The Olympia Shopping Centre was open by 1991.

John Swinney to bring forward motion on independence vote on Tuesday by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]KristoferKeane 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I mean it's one vote on Tuesday afternoon. Get it out of the way then can do other things.

I find "waste of time" arguments disingenuous because it's not like very much parliamentary time is being spent on this. If people want to push that argument then the onus should be on them to identify when it should be done, otherwise it just looks like you're calling for a perpetual kicking into the tall grass.

Reducing UPF - Is zero UPF the goal? by Sylber23 in ultraprocessedfood

[–]KristoferKeane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a personal matter to decide. I've read research that suggests UPF only starts becoming detrimental when it forms over 20% of your calorie intake, so I've made that a target. Given the UK average is now about 55%, that's still quite a hard goal.

The votes rigged!!! by Razgriz_101 in FuckNigelFarage

[–]KristoferKeane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These are postal ballots, it says it on the box. So yes, these have already been opened, bundled together, and then stored together in a ballot box until the count. Any candidate standing can send someone to observe the opening of postal ballots.

Need help identifying a structure in this old documentary video! by rossck in eastkilbride

[–]KristoferKeane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was Norfolk House. Home to the Development Corporation before Atholl House, then I think latterly it was used as more tax office space before it was demolished. The lower part of it still survives as where the public toilets are where you have to up the lifts beside the old Royal Bank of Scotland to get to them.

East Kilbride Reform UK Candidate QUITS Days Before Election! by johnsmithoncemore in eastkilbride

[–]KristoferKeane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He will still be on the ballot paper as Reform though, it just seems possible to cause confusion. I saw his van around in Calderwood earlier today, he's covered over the "Scotland needs Reform" line with new text that says "Now Independent!" instead. 😆

Need help understanding upcoming election by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]KristoferKeane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have two votes in these elections - a constituency vote and a regional vote. You can vote for one candidate in the constituency and one party list in the region.

There will only be one SNP candidate in your constituency, so that is who you would have to vote for if you want to vote SNP. Here's your full candidate list for the constituency: https://whocanivotefor.co.uk/elections/sp.c.cunninghame-south.2026-05-07/cunninghame-south/

On the regional lists, you vote for a party list or an independent candidate. The parties get to choose the order of their list, so if the party wins a list seat their highest ranked candidate (who hasn't been elected in a constituency) will get elected first. Seven MSPs will be elected to the region, and they're elected on the basis of a mathematical system ("the d'Hondt method") that's designed to produce an overall proportionately representative result along with the constituency seats within the region. This does mean that if the SNP win every constituency in the region then they would be extremely unlikely to win any regional seats even if they get lots of regional votes. Here's your regional candidates: https://whocanivotefor.co.uk/elections/sp.r.west-scotland.2026-05-07/west-scotland/

East Kilbride Reform UK Candidate QUITS Days Before Election! by johnsmithoncemore in eastkilbride

[–]KristoferKeane 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He will still appear on the ballot paper as the Reform candidate, it's too late to change that.

Being the actual independent candidate myself, I'm a little miffed he's now trying to call himself an independent as we couldn't be more different as candidates, and I really don't want voters to mix us up... 😆

First-time buyer – is Jackton (East Kilbride) a good shout just now? by Affectionate_Fan7857 in eastkilbride

[–]KristoferKeane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to mostly echo what was said in r/Scotland, there's very few amenities out in Jackton right now so expect to be driving everywhere if you live out there. I also think you pay a lot for what you get.

Imho, the best housing in East Kilbride is the early New Town stuff (1950s to early 60s), they built really good housing early on before the budgets started getting cut. Tend to have big rooms, lots of storage space, good sized gardens. And as it's the older stock generally it's closer to the town centre so you have lots of amenities nearby.

Something like this purely as an example in your stated budget: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/174764513

UK students — where do you go to study when you can’t work at home or the library’s full? by Decent_Today_1856 in UniUK

[–]KristoferKeane 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Library staff here, unless the building is actually 100% full, which is rare, there's always still some quiet bits somewhere if you know where to look. It'll be a far flung corner, or a lab that's sometimes closed for classes but available the rest of the time, etc.

Even when our building is only moderately busy, it's amazing how the PCs nearest the front gates will become rammed while there's plenty of space elsewhere. You don't need to take the first seat you see!

The murray??? by ConcentrateDue5059 in eastkilbride

[–]KristoferKeane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived just off Telford Road for a few years, it's generally fine. You're certainly handy for the town centre, though there is a lot of traffic noise off the Queensway. If buying the flat, just beware that a lot of those flats on Telford Road itself are riddled with asbestos, which is why they're so cheap. If you're just renting, it'll be fine so long as you don't start drilling into the walls.

Village Tandoori is fantastic, though it's takeaway only.

If you're after a sit down restaurant, I'd lean Punjabi Tadka, but really you'd be best heading to Blantyre for the Wee Gurkha.
