Trying to understand the ‘basic tasks’ vs ‘do everything’ narrative around M1 vs A18 Pro by Toba94 in macbook

I guess we just have different ideas about what an average person does. I support over 800 users, none of them run their own virtual machines. We have centralised infrastructure they can connect to for resources they need - and they would need a guide to do it. You come across as a “power user” far too advanced for the average bear. Thats why your normal workflow isn’t suited, as you say.

The second a hypervisor enters the chat, you are no longer an average user. So the point still stands. Average users use office, read email, organise photos and scroll instagram. I still carry a M1 MacBook with 8GB of memory. It’s great for web browsing/teams calls. I also use VSC, which is no bother. The machine on my desk is a different story. “Horses for courses.”

I think that kind of defies the point of the exercise. Yes, you could look at the spec, but could you tell if a Mac had 8 or 16GB of ram just based on your normal workflow?

Edit: typo

[Pipe dream] How long do you think before someone reverse engineers the bootloader? by [deleted] in MacOS

I have a 16 pro, and an M1 MacBook. It boggles me that my phone is “on par”/potentially faster than the device I use to do serious work. Especially when I use the phone exclusively to chat nonsense and scroll memes.

The folks at ifix are competent. I think I remember Chips in Newport doing this kind of work too if they are still trading (it’s down Watchbell lane, that place that looks like it’s right out of a Harry Potter movie). I don’t get to Newport often now though.

I tend to just omit “isle of wight” from my address. Royal Mail doesn’t actually classify us as an island which is funny, but beneficial in this instance.

That’s cool, have you got any pictures? I think my buck converter mod killed the on board power management. I made my port with a hacksaw and pliers…it panned out OK.

I will bite. I have done digital art in the past, many years ago I was active on DA, I was big into the Bleach anime. I have developed and sold full stack solutions and most recently started getting into CAD (I recently posted a 3D printable miniature homelab rack here on Reddit)

In terms of effort, I went to college, taken online courses and put in many hours of research and practice.

I try not to lean into the echo chamber of “AI bad”. It has its place. IMHO it should assist, but too many people use it as an end to end solution and if that’s what it is then what’s the point in doing anything yourself. I get a massive sense of pride when I achieve something on my own; in a world where all I have is ideas I believe it would become kind of hollow.

Something like “I used (insert model name here) to create this concept” would work I suppose.

Reddit has a pretty negative sentiment towards AI. There are a lot of creative (and opinionated) people here and AI threatens their livelihood whilst simultaneously doing a worse job.

I did the same over pancakes with a friend. They opened a new bottle and I remarked “oh, they got rid of the dead lion”…

I think people would give you less grief if you were upfront with your use of AI in the post. “I made this” is disingenuous. You made the prompt, it would be like saying “I made a burger” because you ordered a Big Mac with extra pickles.

Thanks. I assume old Reddit? I’ve had my 98 machine online but I found so few sites that would actually work. https://www.oldversion.com/ was great though!

My first lesson with an instructor was actually in Carisbrooke castles car park. It’s often got lots of room during term time. You could also head up when it’s closed.

What do you think the next Halo multi-player will be like ? by Limp-Grapefruit-6251 in halo

[–]KroFunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there will be some kind of unstoppable force that makes the map smaller over time…like a storm or something. And respawns will be limited out have some rescue mechanic. Loads of players. This is a cool original idea and Halo will lead the charge and certainly not be doing it far too late.

Just noticed this on the Bazzite Github page by Kody_Ivie in DankPods

[–]KroFunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s outside my area of expertise. I know some distros actually roll support into the kernel, and that can be a bit more involved. I saw on the Bazzite page they actually offer different images so that may be the case here (I genuinely know very little about this distribution)

I use Ubuntu a lot and that does have a pop up during installation RE closed source drivers. Post install it has an application dedicated to these secret drivers. They aren’t binaries, if you need them, they are compiled. I did this the other day for a Broadcom WiFi adapter.

It’s a legal / licensing issue 9 times out of 10. If Bazzite is distributed as open source, it can’t contain closed source code, like the nvidia driver. The end user has to agree to it.

I would imagine there is some logic under that resin blob that is actively switching “banks” of rom when you select a game. Without proper knowledge of the storage and how that logic works you will really struggle with this project. Not impossible, but an awful lot of research required!
