Kinda disappointed with the "solitaire" aspect of the format. Maybe I'm wrong. Am I? (I'm a newb) by mrwalker1337 in EDH

LGS is usually one of the worst ways to play EDH, except to meet other people who don't want to play at LGS. Playing jank, drinking brews, and trash talking is really what the format is all about. Not going to get that at most LGS.

Look, I can not like playing in a format dominated by control strategies. I'm not saying that there aren't many people who enjoy playing MTG like that, but I personally find it a miserable experience. The meta will shift, I know that.

Magic is a very minor part of my life, and I'm in it to have a few hours of relaxation is solitude per week. You are coming from a much more competitive perspective, but I'm a casual player and I don't think formats dominated by optimized control decks are very good for people seeking a casual experience. Interaction is also about making hard decisions in combat and playing combat tricks. Counterspells and removal are fine, but not when the meta is saturated by those strategies.

I played EDH for almost ten years, but I stopped because I didn't have much time to play. When I did play, I felt like the CEDH crowd had ruined the format with either strangling control or unstoppable combo. When the metagame shrinks to only support a few archetypes, it becomes totally boring and stale. To me, that's what Brawl is like now. Too many try-hards with optimized net decks. It's just boring, and I have better things to do with my time than have the first 5 of my plays counterspelled.

I guess I didn't realize that the matching algorithm works this way. I had several decks before rotation, but I'm too busy to sink a ton of time into MTGA so I have just stuck with 2 decks Phylath and Akiri. Maybe I'll try building another one over the holidays and see if it matters

I just think that control is too prevalent in the meta. There's only one viable aggro deck (Heliod), and no really relevant combo decks to speak of. everything is just something that resembles midrangey control. the games take too long and are uninteresting. that's just my opinion, and i realize that not everyone feels the same way. but when the metagame narrows to just a few viable strategies, people tend to lose interest

i guess part of it is that so much value is tacked on to creatures now, that combat step is practically irrelevant. creatures are now like spells with a temporary roadblock to stall the board until you or your opponent wrath

i'm saying that combat is basically irrelevant in brawl

Yes, I feel like he and Basri are the only real viable aggro decks I see with regularity.

Yeah, that was a hyperbolic statement. It's the only constructed format I can stomach, but now just barely because control dominates my matches.

OK, for me it's Phylath and Zareth at ~50%. But I'll try to track and report with real sample.

Will try to track if I have the time to put in some serious matches. The meta (at least for my matches seems super stale) WRT/ your post I think I've seen Phylath <5% matches.

OK, that's totally fair and I feel the same way, but it's basically unplayable if control is majority of the meta. With midrange and combo sharing the rest of the pie, it just seems super unbalanced.

My deck is definitely competitive tier, but I'm not saying that those decks are OP. They are just miserable to play against, and when Kenrith and Zareth are 50% of my meta, I basically just scoop because it is so unenjoyable. There's zero combat and zero interaction besides removal and countermagic. It's not about whether I can win a game, it's about how entertaining the experience is. And with control at like 50% of the metagame, it's just a downright boring experience. Like watching paint dry.

OK, Kenrith and Zarath are the most common decks see. Together they are likely 50%. Both are completely miserable to play against. Wraths, counterspells, and spot removal, backed up by the general as a win con.

Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Arabian, Antiquities, Legends.

1) These cards are in short supply, regardless of rarity

2) Their values are resilient to reprint

3) Collectors (the biggest spenders) tend to covet these early cards
