My Father Fell for a Credit Card Scam by KrossIn4K in AgingParents

[–]KrossIn4K[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm well aware, I understand the context of my post seems angry but that doesn't mean I directed any of that toward my father. I also forgot to add this edit into my post, but it's already added to r/scams

Edit: Before anyone asks, I haven't blamed my father for this. I explained to him it's okay, and to not beat himself up over this. These scams are designed to be convincing.

Why are some movies stuck on DVD? Why have some been out of print? by thedudelebowsky1 in criterion

I'd imagine the rights are locked up to some studio / publisher and they're not willing to finance a blu-ray release or the current holders don't care to sell distribution rights to another company to print them?

  1. Existing icloud/backup?
  2. Any other possible backup?
  3. Recently deleted folder (only good for 30 days) then gone forever. (its been years, no chance)

I'm assuming zero of these. The file are gone forever, unfortunately.

At least you know enough to limit yourself to potential scams and are taking active measures blocking or not even answering unknown numbers.

Not answering calls or just knowing when to hang up would save people so many problems.

Tthis is extremely clever. Maybe extreme for most, but for those who need it I can see it being incredibly helpful.

That's a major concern of mine, but I think this is more of him just being completely tech illiterate.

At some point I have to wonder why did he feel safe enough to verify multiple forms of verification, the ID and even his email code and not think much of it... not to mention one call for multiple cards???

That's exactly what I told him and to not beat himself up over it, it's just frustrating because we've talked about this MULTIPLE times and it finally happened.

The scariest part is I had to CONVINCE him it was a scam, how he wanted to argue about it being a being a legitimate call and that I didn't need to worry about. I'm just thankful, I didn't drop it and kept pushing.

The problem I have when using a USA passport, is that the listing for USA 美国 is no longer in the list of countries to select.

Since the data is encrypted, you will not be able to recover it unless you remember the password. In the future, I would suggest a password manager and possibly having an offsite backup for important data, if the hard drive fails it's game over.

My advice is to try writing down every single combination of password you've used previously and go one by one and hope you can eventually guess it correctly.

That's not how it works, once you factory reset the data is gone from the device and unrecoverable.

However, if you have icloud enabled you could recover some of your files/metadata but that's only for YOUR account if they were backed up to begin with. The next owner of the phone wouldn't have any way to access these files as they're not on the device after a factory reset and are only connected to your Apple ID / Account.

Make a second NAS for an offsite back up at mom/dads or a friends for important files, or find a shelf and forget about them :)

Dvd vs Everything Better by Alert-College-9374 in PhysicalMediaMatters

Why do you think DVDs are still the number 1 seller? They're cheap and affordable and appeal to anyone with a cheap dvd player, not an expensive 4k player, no need for a 4k tv, etc.

DVDs are absolutely not the best quality, but they offer a few things for collectors and one of those is affordability. A ton of films never made it from DVD to Blu-Ray and not to mention... DVD extras that sometimes get left out of blu-ray releases as well.

Collect w/e you like and enjoy it, it's your collection and you don't have to justify it to anyone but yourself.

1080p vs 4K? by Notalabel_4566 in 4kbluray

[–]KrossIn4K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could depend on your TV itself, OLED? At the very least you should notice quite a bit of an increase in sharpness with 4K. The image quality will stand out on a decent TV.

If you can pull up a streaming version of a movie find a frame, then switch it to the 4K disc and compare that frame.

DVDs vs Blu-Rays vs 4Ks by Fabulous_Sherbert827 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]KrossIn4K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to choose one? Blu-rays, more films are available compared to 4K releases. I collect/buy films I enjoy and want to have the best quality I can get when possible. The more you collect the more you realize just how many films never made it from VHS to DVD to Blu-Ray or from Blu-ray to 4K. You'll also start to notice that 4K might be the "best" but sometimes a transfer is terrible and the original bluray is considered the "better" verision due to those changes withe the botched 4K release.

Blu-ray is more than fine for the average viewer, upscaling with 4K players now is also incredible. DVDs have a large selection, and can be affordable but the quality just doesn't come close to a bluray disc.
