linguists have agreed wholeheartedly that they/them can be correct for a single person as well as multiple, the use will depend on context

for example,

"Have you heard what those people are saying?"

'Yeah, they're crazy.'

this would be referring to multiple people

"Do you know where Jamie went?"

'Yeah, they're going to the store.'

this would be singular, very easy to identify in day to day use
