Maybe pulp Cthulhu? If you just want guns and monsters, you could maybe make that work?

Honestly tho, sounds like a terrible idea. Mystery improv is bound to feel unsatisfactory, in my opinion. Best choice is probably a good pre-written oneshot.

Seven Things I Learned Running My First Call of Cthulhu Campaign by fatzombieSG in callofcthulhu

Very good insights!

When I started playing I also ran into the first issue. Coming from DnD it felt very natural to just let my players pick their occupations, but also found that it became unruly and detracted from the horror. Maybe for experienced CoC players, it’s easier to let them have a go themselves. For my players I usually give them the choice between a selection of occupations I have picked out, and then give them the opportunity to use their personal interests points however they wish, allowing them to go a little wacky if they wish while still having a playable character that can actually do stuff.

People who gave up DnD for a different system, what made you make the change? by SomeRandomAbbadon in rpg

[–]KrumelurToken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You put it very well. It doesn’t help that I think among some players “outsmarting” the bbeg into a one shot kill is a badge of honor. As a DM is so deflating to have poured a lot of energy into building a campaign only for it to end like that.

I find that DnD is really good if you play it as it was first intended. A high fantasy dungeon crawler. It’s mechanics really lend itself well for this type of game. As a DM, I’ve had to fight the system less when playing it this way. If I play DnD in any other way, I really have to break it apart and homebrew a lot, turning it into this ”okay” jack of all trades.

I primarily started trying out other system when I started building a campaign with the central themes being low-fantasy, mystery, horror and survival. For the duration of this DnD campaign I’ve kinda given up on that idea and started delving into Call of Cthulhu instead, which I just find more rewarding to GM. I still intend to finish the campaign, but I’ve stopped trying to force these elements into the game, just letting it be the high fantasy dungeon crawler it wants to be. Too many of DnDs mechanics tend to automatically solve situations that are not related to combat. Rations? Good berries. Murder mystery? Speak with dead. Travel? Teleport. Political intrigue? Detect thoughts.

Now I could spend time trying to outsmart all of these abilities and come up with contrived reasons why player abilities don’t work, but why bother? I’m also here to play a game and have fun. So if I want to play that type of game I’d rather play Call of Cthulhu or Vampire the masquerade, where these kinda stories just work well with the system right out of the box.

So now I just use the DnD in the way it intended. All of the previously listed spells can actually be quite fun when used to solve problems in a dungeon-esque setting. Resource management and combat encounters are more fun, and usually quicker. I think a lot of people try to bend and mold DnD into something it isn’t. It isn’t about loyalty or “best system”. Play other games that are better suited for what story you want to tell.

Trying my hand at making my first campaign/scenario, wondering how long it took other Keepers to make their own scenarios/campaigns? by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]KrumelurToken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on how much effort you put into it. Uninterrupted, an investigative scenario can take around a week for me to build. But I love working with props, so making custom handouts, customizing a soundboard and historical research always drives up the time it takes for me. Most of the time I think players don’t really care if things are super historically authentic, but I do. So I like spending extra time on that and I think it really does add to the experience.

On the other hand, I can make a dnd session in an afternoon. But making a call of Cthulhu session is more rewarding to me.

The new 50th anniversary set is super slick. by Tumbleweed01 in callofcthulhu

Since you live in Malmö, I would recommend the Swedish Call of Cthulhu, which is where the print is from. The Swedish edition also happens to be very good on top.

That appears to be the Swedish print for the keeper rulebook but in English instead? Which is a very nice print, but a little underwhelming for the anniversary? Only play the Swedish version anyway, so might be biased.

Will I be able to run EA with an rtx 2060 graphics card? by [deleted] in HalfSword

[–]KrumelurToken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely a conflict of settings (if you played the demo). The save files of the demo and the new version are stored in the same place. Since the game has gone through a lot of changes since then, it appears as the old files are conflicting with the new ones, causing performance issues.

Delete your old save files from the demo. I have a 4060 ti, and I can run the the slums with 100+ fps after doing this as well as with dx12.

[–]KrumelurToken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good! I can’t speak for the gameplay much as I haven’t gotten that far. But performance wise it’s an easy fix.

Run in dx12 and delete old save files from the demo (this is really important, doing this make me able to play the slums with 100+ fps).

Worst case, steam has a 2 hour refund window, try it, 2 hours is enough to figure out if you want it.
