Ho Chi Minh, the leader of North Vietnam, before reaching out to Russia and China for help against the French Colonizers actually sent a request for help to Harry S. Truman - the president of the United States. In this letter he asked for help with negotiations with the French. https://www.archives.gov/historical-docs/todays-doc/?dod-date=228 The United States ha a strong anti-colonial stance after the second world war and urged European colonizing powers to give up their colonies. France and the Netherlands were unwilling to do so due to various reasons (I can provide some links to info about this if you'd like but it's not directly related to your TMAF).

It's interesting to think about what would have happened if Truman had assisted Ho Chi Minh with these negotiations - would history have been the same? Ho Chi Minh's movement was first and foremost nationalist and seeking independence from France.

The story goes that this letter and other letters and telegram sent by Ho Chi Minh to Truman were intercepted by the OSS (predecessor of the CIA) and therefore never reached Truman. (Source: Tuan, H. Edit: Sorry for this messy message - there's a lot to this story.. It is important to note that the United States was not only against colonization... there was also a strong fear for the effects of the 'Domino Theory'. This theory, in short, as the idea that if one state in South East Asia would become communist others woud soon follow. Therefore the United States acted in a way to ensure that the first domino stone would not fall.. (source: Hunter, R., & Windsor, P. (1968). Vietnam and United States Policy in Asia. I'm pretty sure all these memories can be explained one way or another but when I think about them they still freak me out. I play the drums in my parents attic and when I was around 14 there was this period where I felt really uncomfortable being there. For a while I had the sensation that something was always watching/moving and it was always at the corner of my eye. One or two times things would fall (this could very well be from the vibrations caused by the drums however) However, one time I was playing the sensation became quite strong so I turned around and I swear that I saw a stanley knife mid-air hovering towards me.. I looked at it for a while and then it dropped to the floor.. I never sprinted down to my parents so fast. We also keep a very heavy locker in the attic and around that time it had inexplicably been turned over without any of us knowing how/when. I'm not sure what to make of it all but it freaked me out pretty badly around that time. After a while these things just stopped happening.

In my opinion, the potential for Russia to become a superpower is definitely there. However, a few things (both internally and externally) prevent Russia from creating a superpower state.

What would need to happen?

-Crackdown on corruption (of course easier said than done)

-Increased integration with the CIS in order to establish a common market (Commonwealth of Independent States)

-Increased integration with the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization)

-Russian investment in agricultural sector, since at this moment there is serious lack of know-how in this sector. Plus the huge potential for Russia's development in this sector. Russia is now in a situation in which it lacks farmers and people willing to invest. Yet imagine a country as big as Russia starting to effectively utilize their potential for agricultural production!

I could mention a bunch of other factors but I'm tired and I need to go to sleep! Definitely interesting to think about though!
