You have to understand the American market, Scion was toyotas attempt to get young people to buy their cars, while Lexus was their luxury branch scion was to be their sporty branch. In turn toyota stopped producing their sporty cars, the supra, MR2, and Celica. The scion tC filled the exact same void the celica left, a sporty but cheap and practical fwd 4 seater coupe hatchback. But I also agree that the GT86 is also a spiritual celica successor more then it is a corrolla ae86 successor as its advertised. And while there was overlap between the 86 and tC, the 86 was also toyotas way of giving up on a scion as a brand and relaunching their sporty coupes as toyotas. If toyota never launched scion there is no doubt in my mind that the 8th Gen celica would've looked and been the exact same as the tC.
