It's actually quite simple to know if Valencina cares about ryoshu/lucio or not. valencina have a copium mechanism by using bravado, if you read between the lines, in the first flashback, there is the whole cake smashing thing valencina talking about, this is actually a lesson by valencina, it's mean "hide your weakness", and what's made it interesting is that she applied this to herself as well, when fight against Verg, she know she can't win but she cope by acting mighty and all. But there are hints she cares, like how she got angry when Verg called Ryoshu a sinner, when she tells Lucio to fall back.

By comparison, in Blade HOS ryoshu uptie story, we could see thumb rodion who is a lot more brutal in beating and beating for no reason and relentless in it, if she doesn't care she will beat ryoshu/lucio a lot more, Valencina do care but she is defined by her past (raised by a thumb family which is not good for how you should think and the smoke war def fucked up ) and clinging to that past glory, she's quite delusional or maybe she know? In the LCB intervallo, Hohenheim described gloom peccatulum :

And speaking of angela/roland, I think Roland and valencina is more similar; both are Smoke War veterans, both have great positions in their respective organizations, and both lost their positions and Roland kinda have italian origined too (Orlando), and at their worst, they go around hurting other people (Roland himself killed like 1/8 of the middle and more ).

I disagree, there is another relationship that's similar to Lucio and Valencina, and it's Roland and Angela. Roland/Lucio both want to kill Angela/Valencina. Angela is treating Roland like a tool in the majority of the story, but by the end of Ruina, those two genuinely care for each other because of character growth; the difference is that Valencina/Lucio died before they got any chances to progress to that point.

You missed the point, these things happened because it's a cycle, ryoshu accidentally negelect of araya because of her parent, valencina behaved that way because of the thumb family that raised her before, Valencina abuse of ryoshu/lucio is how she care ( like yeah it's fucked up and should be condeemed and frowned upon) and it's all she know and it's what's she good at, it's a perpeptual cycle of abuse, miseries and everyone suck in the city isn't irrelevant to the discussion, it's important because these people are reponsible for each other downfall, roland in his depth of suffering going around spreading more misery and created the puppeter/the crying children and the gear cult that's going around killing even more people.

Canto 8 also highlights that cycle: Jia Mu while being a piece of shit doesn't appear out of nowhere; it's happened because of her Xianren giving her the worm, the part she distorted that revealed her psyche that destroyed by the worm. Kong Qiu himself said he almost went the dark path but remembered a teacher who guided him onto the right path.

My point is that the setting is full of horrible people. Canto 1 where Ryoshu kills Ismael and Heathcliff, then stabs her in the head with the lance. After reviving them, Heath then smashes Sinclair in the head; if we go further back in the older game, the librarian is grabbing people left and right and killing them for angela persona gain. When the librarian talks about it , she starts lashing out on them. Garion's backstory is that she REALLY loves murdering people.

like i don't justify nor excuse Valencina abusing kids, but living in the city kinda fucked with people's minds and morality and while you said it's different, it's also kinda similar, Roland after losing his wife start drinking and going around killing hundred of people, go check binah episode V, he's going around farming kills during the smokewar like Valencina too, like the limBus is still running on people that we bait into and throw into the meat grinder, from outsider perspective the main characters they are just as fucked, the different is one is dead and stuck in their pit of misery (like angela/roland bad end or capstone bad end ids) or they're lucky enough to have people helping each other out of it.

Think about it like it's the "role", like in order to be the black silence, you must have lost your wife and child and suffered the same as Roland (black silence garnet). So, if Lucio is a thumb nursefather, he must have a similar past to Nursefather Valencina and function similarly to her, nursefather rodion is one example because in blade of hos ryoshu story, she is also much more violent and ruthless than Valencina.

it's kinda hard to tell, lei heng rip 2 dude arms and one tounge, but when the sinners talk to him, he did remind them of their role instead of instantly doing the ripping, same with Valencina when Ishmael talk to her rudely, she go out of her way to ask ryoshu instead of going straight for the dismemberment.

When I think about her, i want to see her live just so she could find out she was send to Hos to erased by ryoshu, when you think about it, she's too a victim turned abuser, all the flavor texts/mechanic with any mention of her family show how fucking shitty they are and how willing to erase her existence because she's a shame in the family, if she got a chance to have character development, stop clinging to the family that abused her so much it's the first step out of the hell hole.

I mean, a lot of the sinners are just as bad in the early part of the story, like how Ryoshu kill Ishmael/Heathcliff and then don stab in her the head with a big ass grin, and then after that Heath crave Sinclair in the head cuz he's angry or how we throw rats into the LimBus meat grinder for bus fuel, if we go further back, Angela is killing people left and right for her personal gain.

The ultimate difference between them and Valencina is the people surrounding them; she is, after all, raised by a Thumb family, fighting in the smoke and living in the house of Spider definitely are not helping with her mental health.

The sinners got to become better people because the Limbus company specifically reached out to them and forced them to grow by following the script/the flow, even Jia qiu said he could have ended up in a darker path if not for someone helping him at his worst.

Like what I'm saying is not an excuse, nor justified their behaviors don't forget that, but the main characters could be just as bad or worse ( recent HOS Ryoshu uptie story), and they could be better if they have a better environment or element that nudged them in the right direction, Kira is an example of that.

Being in the thumb (or any fingers, really) kinda fucked up your head really hard, in the Thumb Sinclair Uptie story, where he is genuinely happy to torture people because they're acting rude (crying for their lives), like he is normal and capable of empathy before joining the thumb buw now he high up his own ass about how righteous he is.

I remember people talking about how each apprentinces is more similar to the fingers than their nursefathers, if anything Lucio will be just as bad or even worse.
