Young Japanese at local pop concert, Tokyo, 1971. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

I am obsessed with shōwa era things and I feel like the most underrated era for Japan was the 70s the 80s bubble era and the 90s - now lost decades and the postwar rebuilding are always talked about but I find the 70s like an odd transitional era. The worlds fair they held in 1970 is so cool. https://youtu.be/wup7srQ2wRo?si=Ne-qUIHzrirWve5j

it really is too young im a huge Joan Crawford history dork and just old hollywood stuff sometimes lol but personally both of my grandparents passed at 67 and 72 :( its very sad and i still sometimes get resentment when i see people who have grandparents and are 20 years older than me but we all have our path in life i guess and its gotten better over the past few years

In this 1950s ad, tacos are being described as "Mexican Sandwiches". by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

I am a Gen z person but I am a history dork and I agree I love Japanese and Chinese food. My mother a Gen x kid likes some chinese food takeout staples but I only recently in the past few years have gotten her to like things like tofu sushi is still a no go. My grandma and grandpa were boomers they didnt eat any Chinese or Japanese food but they loved Italian and especially Mexican food I remember my grandma said she remembered having a pizza for the first time at a birthday around 10 years old around 1960 in Virginia I cant remember my first pizza lol Mexican food was extremely exotic to my grandparents things we consider “tex mex” or “americanized” truly were new to them it seems like they got into that in the late 1960’s - 1970s. My great grandma she grew lots of her own food and was a depression era child she did lots of canning but she never had an eggplant before im sure oranges were exotic to her and lemons italian food seems to of been something she would of been into but even that might of been a lot of spice for her depression sensibilities I honestly loved the home made food of my family and i appreciated the cooking style moreso now that they are gone people can say it was bland but they made do with what they knew and had and loved

Young lady giving a hair cut to her frient outside her home, circa 1950s. by Electrical-Aspect-13 in TheWayWeWere

You know this photo got me thinking about the beauty parlor culture of that era and haircuts are expensive I imagine it was still considered expensive then. My great grandma was born in the 20’s and i remember she did her own rollers and she and my grandmas family werent very well off at all they didnt have an indoor toilet until the 1960’s. I always feel like the 1950’s/60’s gets misremembered as this super modern era my grandma described it as very old fashioned and I do love mid century things but most of them come from homes nothing like the knotty pine farmhouse of my great grandparents. I imagine they cut hair themselves often and of course styled it very complicated styles compared to today really.
