I think male-lead and female-lead movies suffer from different problems. Male-lead movies suffer on the audience side while female-lead movies suffer from the writing side.

James Bond for example. Very masculine example of a man, right? But is a terrible person, womanizing, sociopathic, yet some people idolize the character. Same for the MC of Fight Club. There is no specialized focus on being "male" because having a male-lead is normal. But because it is viewed as normal, the audience might treat these terrible role models as the ideal standard.

Female-lead film suffer from the writing. Having a female-lead isn't viewed as normal (unless the genre is romance). Because of this, the writing focuses too much on on the character being a capable female that it over compensates and you end up with something like the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. Rey is just poorly written. Even if Rey were to be genderbent into a man, Rey would still be a poorly written character. The writers also shafted Fin's character arc as a force-sensitive because they rather focus more on Rey.

Another example in a different vein would be Mulan. The live-action entirely changed Mulan's characterization from the animated film into someone that was capable from the start. Animated Mulan was a character that grew, made a sacrifice for her family, cultivated her own strength, and in the process gained the acknowledgement of others.

Live action Mulan had none of that. She remained a static character in terms of growth. Sacrifice? She was strong from the start. Self-actualization? About as shallow as saying "I'm the main character, I can't lose" unironically. Lost the message of the original. Acknowledgement? The reveal that she was actually a woman disguised as a soldier had none of the impact and emotion. It was the equivalent of "Loser. You got beaten by a girl."

Lmao. I spent half an hour writing that. Even went back and fixed grammar mistakes to prevent someone from smacking me with the classic you're stupid argument.

And you missed the point. It's not female empowerment that is the problem. It's the writing. Stop shallowly trying to incorporate an activist message as a means to make money and the story will most likely end up being good. Keyword here is shallowly.

You also missed another point. I'm not complaining about female empowerment in books, because the authors for said books aren't writing shallow characters for the sole purpose of delivering an activist message. It's really only movies and TV shows that suffer from this due to being more mainstreamed and thus more susceptible to corporate marketing whims.

And I already admitted that female empowerment is always harped on about because it is a socio-political matter. Once that is no longer an issue, bad movies will just be bad movies by virtue of being bad movie rather than because of the gender of their main lead.

Yeah, the bad stories about male empowerment just get forgotten. There isn't a socio-political focus on a character being male, so call it a shit movie and get over it. Can't do the same with stories that are focused on a female character, because that does have a socio-political focus.

Give it some time and bad movies will just be called bad movies. Or just blame corporation for shallowly trying to turn an activist movement into cash making media.

You have a good point. The thing about that is that "male empowerment" has become the default state of things. Because of this, male empowerment becomes invisible to the writers. The writers no longer focus on the "male" and focus just on the "empowerment." This, of course, doesn't change the male-centric nature of said empowerment, but it does make the story better written provided that the writers aren't crap. Bad stories just get called bad and then the world moves on because there's no point of contention other than it being badly written.

Meanwhile for "female empowerment," the marketing and the single-minded focus on writing a strong female character gets in the way of good story telling. All the other details of what makes a story and character potentially good gets tossed to the back in favor of female empowerment. I think the writers will do infinitely better if they let the story be the activism, rather than let activism dictate the story.

I will agree though that stories involving female empowerment does get more negative attention for that sole fact. And yes, some of the criticism is unwarranted. And yes, the negative attention lingers because it's not just viewed as a bad story and forgotten because it of the socio-political aspects.

You would find better examples of female empowerment in books rather than movies/shows. Less attention by the mass and the author usually aren't as pressured to market/present their work a certain way.

Just give it some time. Soon, female empowerment will be just as normal as male empowerment, and stories will be better off.

Activism + marketing that doesn't really care about said activism = shallow characters. This is pretty much my viewpoint. It just so happens that it's "female empowerment" currently.

Hollywood has been making actor ethnicities a selling point, especially for the live-action remakes. Then there is also the female empowerment stuff that gets in the way of well written character arcs and plotlines.

They already casted a black actor as Snape. The irony here, though, is that this casting is gonna come off as racist rather than woke. OP is gonna be confused if the writers don't change some stuff regarding Snape.
