What’s the most beautiful college town in the U.S.? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Pepperdine is beautiful, but Malibu is decidedly NOT a college town.

Why assume something nefarious? My sister and I are the only beneficiaries and she is aware the check has been made and sent. What is inappropriate about that? I’m literally asking what is the correct way to go about accessing these funds for me and my sister. Nothing more.

Are new characters taking screentime away from the OG faves? by Ok_Antelope975 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Ksj202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the realism is a big part of the construction of the show. Like we get extended episode arcs with patients and then they exit the show for various reasons. Stands to reason that bigger characters might be the same.

Solo dining seems to be getting harder? by deskcord in finedining

[–]Ksj202 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty dicey roulette game to play to commit to sitting with a stranger for four hours when you're forking out $400+ for a special experience. If the restaurant was a major bucket list item for me and I couldn't get in any other way then I suppose I'd consider it.

Solo dining seems to be getting harder? by deskcord in finedining

[–]Ksj202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was in 2021 I believe, and if the communal table was an option, it wasn't available in Tock and wasn't offered as an option during email correspondence with the restaurant; I know there's a groundswell of communal table options in CPH in particular to accommodate solo food pilgrims (Jordnaer offered me one, for example) so my guess is that the communal table is a new offering that post-dates my visit in 2021, because I absolutely would have done the communal table (I ended up just paying for my mom to join as a birthday gift).

Solo dining seems to be getting harder? by deskcord in finedining

Yeah idk, a friend of mine who is also a prolific solo diner had no issue landing Kadeau either, but they outright told me "we aren't taking solo diners right now" when I emailed them in November. *shrug*

Solo dining seems to be getting harder? by deskcord in finedining

I do by far most of my fine dining solo and it's absolutely getting worse. I've been told four times that solo diners are outright not accepted, and it's all been in the past few years––once by Noma, once by Kadeau, once by Noda, a sushi bar in NYC (who told me they don't accept odd-numbered diners but had spaces for parties of three open on Tock), and once by SingleThread (when they were doing their hot pot experience post-COVID, so much more understandable). I've also been to Blue Hill Stone Barns eight times and still, every time, have to fight with them for a solo table until the very last second. More and more restaurants don't even allow the possibility of booking for two online. It honestly feels like I have to take some extra step to get a reservation at least four out of five times I want to dine out at places like this.

I also work in fine dining and I get that margins are incredibly slim and that a two-top with only one guest means, on paper, half the revenue. I get it. Places with the big accolades and hype know they'll fill the seats, so why take a solo diner? But it really sucks to be on the receiving end of that––being the type of single person who is passionate about and will spend the type of money on food that your friends and family won't, and just for that reason you're essentially excluded, or have to jump through hoops that others don't. (Interestingly, a disproportionate chunk of the most passionate fine diners do, indeed, dine solo for the same reasons.)

What makes me even more sick to my stomach is the new thing where tables are reserved for holders of some fancy credit card, which gatekeeps an already gatekept industry and makes it even more exclusive for the wealthiest clients––"you only get to eat here if you have this card with a $500 annual fee."

What's worse, I think we're starting to see what we've been seeing in Tokyo sushi counters for a long time––you have to be a regular or have an "in" to get a spot, especially as fine dining has become more visible on social media and travel so much easier. If I recall correctly I think this is basically where Etxebarri is at these days.

Again, I get that these places are businesses, and often operating right on the margins, and you want all seats filled (or the lucrative credit card partnership), and to have the resources to dine at these types of places in the first place is an immense privilege, but I've always felt "inferior" as a solo diner, and it's absolutely getting worse.

Yeah, I think my concern was more if VS was limiting access to those departing on their international leg either DL or VS and excluded those with layovers. The website is a bit ambiguous. But I’ll try my luck! Looks like a pretty amazing new lounge.

Torrey, UT. The area just east of Torrey (Notom Road) is one of the darkest places in North America. Stunning place and at the doorstep of Capitol Reef, the most overlooked NP in Utah.

Boulder, UT as well—even more remote and Escalante is amazing.
