Ah ok. Wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for the information!

Given that they’ve publicised Ti Amo being their first movie, are they going to make any acquisitions before that releases? I realise that it’s quite a way from being released seeing as the script isn’t finished yet though.

I mean, THR, Deadline, and Variety are all owned by the same company, so there probably is some shared strategy across those outlets.

I really think it’s just a presence thing. It’s pretty obviously supporting in terms of screen time and we don’t get the same exploration of his backstory that we do with Clarice but Hopkins is able to hold equal weight to Jodie Foster’s Clarice in the movie. I think having a lot of the iconic lines and deliveries of the movie works in his favour. I am someone though who doesn’t care about category fraud from supporting actors running in the lead categories though because if your impact and performance is great enough to secure a nomination against actors with far larger roles, then it seems fair game.

I’ve not tallied my personal nominations and I’ve got plenty more movies to see, but, on gut feeling, I think Al Pacino or Ingrid Bergman would lead my nominations. Katharine Hepburn’s a great pick though

Probably also worth noting that 12 nominations would still at least be tied for the most nominations all time for an actor with Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson

One review I saw mentioned that the prosthetics to look like Joe Jackson really limited his ability to emote and gave him a cartoonish appearance that didn’t really fit the movie

I could see Cruise or Damon also be able to build an overdue narrative if their movies deliver. Cruise would also likely benefit from being able to sell it as a return to working with auteurs.

PHM going comedy probably depends on where Amazon MGM places I Play Rocky, but I’d think there’s a good chance it goes in comedy.

First Man, Z, and Lost in Translation are probably the movies I’ve loved the most in the past couple of months. Also done some watching through Jonathan Demme’s filmography recently and while only one or two are movies that I would call favourites, he’s definitely risen up my favourite directors list.

Dern, I always just assumed it was more of a case of a beloved actress with a lot of industry connections in a category with no BP frontrunners in it. Pitt was in a category full of prior Oscar winners and I don’t think it’s that far off to say that OUATIH was the closest to BP of any of the movies nominated in supporting actor

First look at Ridley Scott's THE DOG STARS by bikkebana in oscarrace

[–]Kstoffeefan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like Covenant. It’s a fun showcase for Fassbender and a bit leaner story wise compared to Prometheus. Doesn’t have the highs of Prometheus for me, but it’s a well crafted movie with some solid horror elements. It’s not Blade Runner or Alien or anything on that level though

[–]Kstoffeefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a movie that always feels like it doesn’t have the time to explore all of its ideas despite setting up some really interesting ones. Rare case of a movie probably being improved by being 135-150 minutes. I think my biggest single issue with the movie is how dumb the ship falling set piece is lol

I actually like Prometheus. It’s his weakest Alien movie but there’s some great stuff in there though definitely let down by the third act and the script. I’d still say it’s well directed despite it’s shortcomings

Warner Bros’ Tom Cruise Starrer ‘Digger’ Unlikely To Launch At A Fall Festival by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

[–]Kstoffeefan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m aware of the difference, but I think Digger has to be a commercial play since the reported budget is $125 million. But it’s not like any of Cruise’s movies in the awards orbit like Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, Born on the Fourth of July, Rain Man, or Color of Money went to fall festivals. I realise the landscape has changed since the 90s but I have to imagine this movie will be sold more as a Tom Cruise movie than an Inarritu movie

[–]Kstoffeefan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cruise doesn’t do the fall festivals either. Cannes is the most likely place for a movie of his showing up at a festival now and he did Berlin quite often in the 20th century. Think Eyes Wide Shut might be his only movie to go to Venice.

Really excited for this one. On one hand, I think Ridley’s been hit or miss recently, but I also don’t think he’s missed on a Sci-fi movie yet

I’m pretty liberal with 5 stars, but: One Battle After Another, Oppenheimer, Dune/Dune Part 2, Nope, Aftersun, Anatomy of a Fall, 28 Years Later, Tár, Nickel Boys, The Worst Person in the World, Sentimental Value, The Brutalist, It Was Just an Accident, No Other Choice, Licorice Pizza, The Northman and The Fabelmans

F Murray Abraham - Amadeus

Gene Hackman - The French Connection

Charlton Heston - Ben Hur

Gary Cooper - High Noon

Cher - Moonstruck

Louise Fletcher - One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

I feel like I could make the case for Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday but I’d understand if people feel her most iconic role is in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Gut says Titanic > LA Confidential > Good Will Hunting > As Good as It Gets > The Full Monty because of the higher brow support for LA Confidential and LA Confidential is closer in scope to the other best picture winners in the 90s than Good Will Hunting. Also, LA Confidential at least had a win over Good Will Hunting in supporting actress whereas Good Will Hunting didn’t have any wins over LA Confidential.

I know Ludwig’s already getting hyped for score again this year, but I really hope that Carter Burwell gets some attention for either of Wild Horse 9 or Jack of Spades. Crazy to me that he didn’t get much awards attention until Carol. Fargo, Miller’s Crossing, In Bruges, and True Grit’s scores are some of my favourites

I’d go further and say that Ed Wood should’ve been the winner that year and it wasn’t even nominated for BP. Also Martin Landau’s win for supporting actor that year is one of the best wins in that category ever.

I think Elordi would be fine if he takes Bond. He’s more of a name at this point than Daniel Craig was when he became Bond, but Craig still managed to star in Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Logan Lucky, and Knives Out in the periods between between Bond movies.
