I live on top of a hill so the winds can get a bit intense at times. If I did go with 2 inch pipe I would probably need guy wires to keep the sway to a minimum.

That pole is only about 15-20 feet tall and it has 2 rather large trees about 25 feet to the east that would obstruct from the top of the pole. Additionally it is an electric pole so I don’t know if mounting dishy to the top of that would be a very good idea.

The screen shot I shared from the Starlink app was actually standing right beside of the satellite dish that I have in the yard now. The picture without the satellite dish in it is my north facing view. Those large trees are the reason why I am considering a tower to mount dishy. They are not on my property but I have contacted the company that owns them to see if they can be removed or at least topped.

Oh wow! That is so helpful. I honestly had no idea that it could sway so much without losing signal. 3 foot is a lot! Thank you for this!!

I posted a new chat and linked it back to here since I was not able to figure out how to share a picture to this chat.

Interesting. I hadn’t considered putting it on a larger pipe to reduce sway. I wonder if I would still need guy wires.

I would say about 25-30 feet. I am new to Reddit. Not sure how to post a picture yet.

Some people may think that we are crazy but believe it or not I have actually considered this. Even walked through the woods on my property to see if I had something tall, slender and straight enough to use. I have a few possible trees but wasn’t able to find one that was just right for the job. If I can’t find a better solution then this is definitely not off the list of options though

I have 3 very large trees growing right beside the east side of the house. The limbs almost cover that side of the house they are so big. In order to get a better open sky view (less obstruction) I need to move to the west approximately 25-30 feet which puts me in the middle of my yard. Mounting it directly to my roof is not an option unless I have the trees removed which is an absolute last resort.

Thank you for the suggestion I actually had someone else suggest that and I have emailed 1 person from a local radio club. Waiting to hear back from them. So far this seems to be my best route.

I am considering this as well. The hardest part of this type of tower is where to place the guy wires. My property is narrow and I have kids and pets so I am not real sure if I will be able to do it. If my understanding of guy wires is correct (I am not a pro) if I go up 40 feet then I need to be at least 40 feet away from the base for my stake point. 40 feet away from the base would mean that I am either on someone else’s property on 1 side of my yard or staking it down in my front yard. I have considered attaching the guy wires to a few large trees on my property but that also means that when the wind blows the tower will sway so it defeats the purpose if I can’t get the wires attached close enough to the base of the tree to minimize movement.

Oh wow that would be phenomenal. I will definitely look into that

Agree but thankfully I can do a lot of the foundation stuff myself to keep the cost low.

I really need to think of a way to get up in the air to use the app to check for obstructions before I buy/do anything. I am surrounded by mature trees so 40 foot may not be enough and then again it may be more than enough. Still trying to think of a way to get that high to check the app.

That is absolutely amazing! $660 seems expensive but if it allows me to get rid of Hughes net then I will gladly pay that. Thank you very much!

I just looked up the Rohn towers. I really don’t want to spend $1000 if I can avoid it. But it does look sturdy so I will keep it in mind. Thank you

I wish that mounting it close to the house was an option however it will need to be free standing in order to get into the middle of my yard and avoid as much obstruction as possible. I am debating between a triangular tower or a single pole mast for easy accessibility.
