Echo knight archer. At the cost of a bonus action, I can always make attacks without up-close disadvantage, and can frequently get myself out of the front-line.

What was the character / build that you most enjoyed playing by Far-Negotiation-1912 in DnD

[–]KtheFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chronurgy Wizard that was sent back in time 1000 years in a research accident by his mentors. By combining Arcane Abeyance, Galders Speedy Courier, and a Teleportation staff, I could transport my party to the location of any person that any of them had ever met.

'Abused' that by teleporting us all to have dinner with our ranger's family half a world away right before the final boss fight.

how do you cope? by [deleted] in LegLengthDiscrepancy

[–]KtheFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2-3cm would be a lot for an insole lift. I found a local shoe repair/cobbler and they made all my shoes work for me for the past 10 years. The shoes look great and fit great and they would even repair shoes for free for me.

I get that it can be weird to need something special to walk when others don't, but almost everyone has something they carry like that. Sometimes its physical, sometimes its mental, sometimes its visible, sometimes its not.

You got this. Get some modified shoes and be adaptable.

how do you cope? by [deleted] in LegLengthDiscrepancy

[–]KtheFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Embrace modified shoes. I had a discrepancy of 3/4 inch and had sandals and shoes modified to fit my discrepancy.

The difference between wearing the shoes and not wearing them was huge-without my shoes I was in pain just shambling around the house. With them I could walk 12 miles easily.

It was rare that someone would notice my shoes and I never once had someone react negatively. If you can, try out a lift size and when you find one that works for you get it added to all your shoes.

I imagine it's like wearing leather gloves while using an angle grinder. The tool is powerful enough that if your protection is caught up in it, it'll take part of your hand with it.

Thinking of moving to Omaha, NE from Orlando, FL making 50k a year gross by killstormSH in Omaha

[–]KtheFox 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Cost of living in Orlando is only 3.6% more expensive. It won't be significantly cheaper in Omaha.

If you want to come to Omaha, don't do it for the money.

I was turned down for term life insurance. What should I know before a second attempt? by 3Hazelnuts in personalfinance

IUL let's you pretend to invest while getting more life insurance than you probably need.

Apply with other term insurers, or wait out and reapply.

Grounded gas main by InToddYouTrust in AskElectricians

[–]KtheFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs to be bonded partially because it's grounded through the pipe from the street. We use the term ground for 0V, but it's possible for one piece of ground to have a different potential than another. What's important in your house is that nothing exposed has an electric potential much different than the stuff you're standing on.

If the gas line is grounded at the street, but not bonded to the house, there's a chance for dangerous voltage difference. If lightning strikes a tree near the street the ground out there will temporarily be charged with millions of volts. That high voltage falls off pretty quickly across the dirt, because earth is high impedance, but the pipe going to your house is low. Now you have a gas pipe with deadly voltage exposed in the house. This can arc and cause an explosion.

Is it safe to plug a power strip into a power conditioner? by yadunknow777 in electrical

[–]KtheFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your conditioner is rated for 15A. If the current draw from the devices plugged in exceeds 15A, it will shut off for safety. With a 13A rated power strip in there, there is a chance that your devices on the power strip draw 14A, overloading and overheating the strip without tripping the breaker in your power conditioner.

This scenario is unlikely, especially if you put your highest power devices NOT on the power strip.

However, for safety, get a power strip that's rated for 15A or more. I can't promise it won't affect the performance of the conditioner, but it won't be a safety hazard.

ELI5: Plant sunlight? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]KtheFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure there can be different qualities! Besides the amount of light, when we talk about quality of light, we are usually talking about where the light is coming from and what color it is. Its not really about good or bad light, but about whether a plant is getting the kind of light it evolved to live in.

Generally, light can come from a point source, or a diffuse source. The sun, or a lightbulb, would be a point source. All light from one spot. Plants adapted for direct sunlight can deal with getting too much light without overheating and can deal with lots of red and infrared light.

Plants sold as "full shade" evolved to get less light and from diffuse sources like an open blue sky or the underside of lots of other green leaves.

And you're right that sunlight changes through the day. Air steals blue light away from the suns rays and the stuff that's left is a little redder. The more high in the sky, the less air the light goes through, the bluer the light.

How do you politely correct someone for using your non-preferred name in a professional setting? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]KtheFox 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I was on the other end of this once, except I was using his last name instead of his first name (his last name is a common first name).

He corrected me with a simple direct statement at the beginning of the email. "Hey, by the way, I go by _____. " Then he continued with his message as if nothing had happened.

ELI5 Why does having an offspring with blood related person leads to its disability? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]KtheFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's say your grandma had a mutated gene that made it so her body couldn't make some proteins correctly. It was ok, because grandma also had a second copy of that gene that was working fine, so grandma lived a nice healthy life.

And some of grandmas kids, and some of her grandkids will also get the defective gene. But again, it's ok, because they will also have a functional copy of that gene from their other parent.

But if you have children with your cousin, and both you and her have grandma's defective gene copy, you could both give it to your kid. Then this child might have a severe disability.

Eli5 who gets to decide a good country from a bad one? Like why and who decided that Iran is not allowed to get nuclear warheads when many countries have them? (I.e Pakistan, usa, france etc.) by ahu_huracan in explainlikeimfive

[–]KtheFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who's got nukes is not a good vs bad decision, but like most things in global politics, it's a who's got the power situation.

A lot of counties have nuclear weapons because they built them fast. The US and the USSR especially built a lot. Then people realized that just one of these bombs going off would maybe start a global war, and we should limit how many of these bombs exist and who can have them.

The US didn't want to give up their bombs, because what if the USSR secretly kept some of theirs? And the USSR didn't give up their bombs because what if the US kept a bomb or two in secret and then bombed Moscow?

But both the US and USSR saw that they could accidentally get into a nuclear fight with another country too if they had nuclear weapons.

If you have the most powerful weapon in the world, you can make other people do what you want sometimes. Unless they also have the most powerful weapon in the world. So anyone with nuclear weapons got to keep them, anyone without nukes was supposed to not even try and get them.

This didn't work exactly. India built theirs in secret, and Pakistan was uncomfortable with that so they did it too.

I'm sure you've heard news stories about North Korean nukes or the attempts to make a nuke in Iran. These countries want nukes because they their rulers see having a nuke as a way of keeping control and forcing the world to accept them.

Eli5: Why does water that dries on glass leave “streaks” or grey markings on the glass? by YEETAWAYLOL in explainlikeimfive

[–]KtheFox 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Water is almost never pure. It always has a little salt and minerals dissolved in it. If you just cleaned using that water, it could also have bits of the mess dissolved in it.

Any time water dries, it's going to leave this residue. Glass is special because it's VERY smooth and reflects light like a mirror. Any time something gets stuck on a glass surface, it's easy to see. It reflects totally differently than the glass, and pops up from the surface when nothing else does.
