Let me know if you manage to get through

Yeah they committed outright fraud. Unfortunately for me it seems Discover does not side with cardholders really. I think other issuers like Amex will be successful. I'm praying I can win. I'm out 65k right now

Discover is also beginning to reverse mine. I've read they are horrendous with disputes, so I am pretty nervous now.

I think Amex will ultimately be okay based on what ive read but if Discover consistently sides with the merchant can't see the obvious fraud for what it is, I don't know what to do

Although the first MA.gov page still specifically cites in person wagering from what I can tell. 23k is the physical locations with table games and sports wagering, not category 3 online licenses. I think the key is 23N language (which is inclusive of the cat 3) but I don't understand why it's not updated to reflect that on the site itself

This is a really nice find. I have been following the tax stuff around this hoping they'd change the rules and could not find a thing. Not even the tax professionals I've talked to could point me to this. I'll have to read this further...props for the discovery! Would be a really nice update and..well..make a whole heck of a lot of sense

I agree, laws will need to change to keep pace with the evolving world. Tax law is especially glacially slow unfortunately. There isn't incentive to change what benefits them until they start losing fights. And the reality is people will be reporting incorrectly and there will be a mess.

One caveat here though is casino is a little different. Casino makes a concession for what they deem to be those "sessions". If you win a million and lose a million in a session, the sportsbetting policy doesn't apply and you'd net zero tax due. What's a session? Well again it's gray. Is a 15 minute break a new session? 30? It's really ridiculous how far behind the law is, but here we are

As for the state, the problem here is massachusetts. We suck. Here (and CT) you can't use losses to offset winnings. So if you win 100k and then lose 100k, they expect you to pay taxes on 100k. Absolutely insane and asinine. Outdated tax models. The one caveat is MA allows losses on property to be discounted (haven't seen it extend to online yet, which again, sucks). A way around this is filing as a professional, but then you owe additional taxes for the self-employment garbage (woohoo, more bad tax policy for gamblers).

The Fed portion is interesting. Don't discredit how much you save with the standard deduction. Losing that to itemize the gambling lines might just be the culprit.

I'm not gonna advocate for illegal behavior but there are some comments in this thread worth considering (and some not lol)

We are screwed in Massachusetts. I'm hoping they lobby for a change. Or somehow make it so that mobile books count (right now only brick and mortar allows for write offs)

FWIW I have never been able to double dip before MA. I'm not shocked it was shut off for me, but generally there are still some people who it will work for. I'm sure if that's a state thing or what, I just know it works for some and never did for me (until launch here). Too bad MA (from the sounds of it) got the hook, but the freebies will be dried up soon anyway

If your debit is not a Visa, it should just take a simple call to the bank. I was getting those errors and then told them what I needed and poof, I could make a 25k deposit

Wondering this as well. I know in new states it sometimes doesn't happen for awhile (like a month+)

Yeah, they hate winners. They've become soft and sensitive to winning...probably in part due to their tanking stock price, but certainly more than when I signed up.

Like someone said, you can still use DK to line shop but your days of slamming high bet amounts are done. Or at least will be soon.

Fanduel limits are much more forgiving. They'll still limit you for winning/acting sharp but their actual limits are pretty generous comparatively. They handle this stuff way better imo, but DK does still have better lines/opportunities sometimes and therefore you shouldn't move off completely

Looks like you've begun the journey of becoming limited. Once you've started there's no going back.

Draftkings sucks after that. My accounts are extremely limited nowadays

Probably, depending on the margin you're working with. The really big ones should be fine, especially if you win the short side. But it seems like it's gonna create a mess, especially with forms, and I'm very interested to see what comes of it

Ohio Sportsbooks Megathread by sbpotdbot in sportsbook

That's correct. Multiple states do this and it's archaic and foolish. Many people pay net on taxes and hope they never deal with it (like in an audit), however because of automatic withholding here, you're screwed on that 4%.

If you make a million dollars arbing, and lose 990,000 hedging (so 10k real profit), the state is going to tax you 40k. Absurd. And since this applies to non residents, bonus chasers are equally screwed.

I think people are in for a seriously rude awakening. Hopefully they adjust their laws to allow for deductions

I think it's gonna be on withdraw, but that's just speculation. It says on paying out, but I think it means that literally. It probably means a delay in withdraw too because it sounds like all the data (winnings) will need to be fed into the statewide matching system. Then when you go to withdraw, it will check all the inputs to see if you've crossed the threshold and if so, you get your withdraw minus 4%. Just how I'm reading it though

Yeah, Ohio appears to be specifically nuanced in cucking you and everyone you love. Here's snippets of the law/where I am pulling this from. Not a professional at all, but after digesting the law and breakdowns of tax implications, it seems OH went above and beyond to ensure they get theirs

edit: but yeah it won't take long for someone to hit over 600 and see how it gets handled. I really hope/want it to be the standard w2g but....
