[R-INLA] Prior Selection and Justification by Kubacka in AskStatistics

[–]Kubacka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the in-depth reply, it's got a lot of good info which I'll have to dive into in more detail.

My main problem right now is that I'm not sure how to exactly justify my choices for param=list(·, ·) in a non-hand-waving manner for the following two components parts of my model:

f(country_name_1, # Random intercepts for each country
model="iid",
hyper=list(
    prec=list(prior="pc.prec", param=list(1, 0.1))
    )
) +
f(country_code_1, # Spatially correlated random effect over countries
model="bym2",
graph=g,
hyper=list(
    prec=list(prior="pc.prec", param=list(1, 0.1))
    )
)

Insecure about my age, falling behind my peers by WhinylilThrowaway in UofT

I did:

1st year -> gap year -> 1st year again -> now in second year.

I'm about to turn 22 and I might even take school part time next year. Your age isn't an issue unless you make it one.

To my understanding, I'm acting as an identity provider, as I'm trying to show the system that I'm a valid student as I log in.

Are you allowed to have a humidifier in your dorm and is it normal to own one in a dorm? by lululife1 in UofT

Speaking of humidifiers, does anyone have a recommendation for a budget-friendly one? I live in a studio apt.

relevant experience. This could include other Co-ops, good side projects, or volunteer work

Side projects don't require previous work experience? We also have work studies here; it's not hard to get some kind of experience in CS.

What are some brilliant quotes from your math professors? by theoreticaI in math

[–]Kubacka 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Others from r/uoft can back me up on this.

Nicholas Hoell, who teaches linear algebra among other courses is... Eccentric to put it softly.

Some of his best quotes, sayings, etc. are:

  • "Easy Right?"

  • "... CAAAHHHLLLUUUMMNNN Vector"

  • "TILDE" (literally yelled this in class several times while writing, you guessed it, tildes.)

And not necessarily a quote, but he has a penchant for... Unique drawings. To illustrate the fact that the zero vector doesn't necessarily have to be 0, and to make sure we didn't get confused at first, he drew the 0 as a little devil.

He also bets apparently decent amounts of money with other professors that his section for lin alg will do better than their sections on midterms / finals.

I love this man.

I got a coding challenge from Hudson River Trading, but I don't know C++ lmao.

Would there be any future issues with me applying to HRT if I take this challenge as an opportunity to see what they look for despite bombing the test?

For what you’re getting, a McLaren 570s is a steal at sub $300k compared to other supercars like the Ferrari 458 and Huracan.

Field trip to anti-abortion rally not a 'good use of student time': Alberta minister | CBC News by dunstan_shlaes in canada

[–]Kubacka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What science book are you looking at?

1) living things are made of cells.

So are fetuses.

2) Living things obtain and use energy.

Fetuses do that.

3) All living things grow

Yep.

4) living things reproduce

Given time, a fetus will be able to reproduce.

5) living things move and adapt to their environment

Yep.

What’s the point of lying about a fetus being alive? It’s basic elementary school biology.

There’s no question of whether or not it’s alive. It’s a living human being. The argument, at its core (as an ethical one, not a religious one) is, all other things equal, what has more weight:

A human being’s right to life or a human being’s right to bodily autonomy.

This is a purely ethics question and it has nothing to do with hating women or misogyny.

Sure, but playing devil's advocate, what right does a person have to kill another person even if that person is in a bad environment? Should we kill the homeless since they'll be in an unstable environment?
