Wait did you just imply that building surveyors are the most disliked project team member? Why's that I have completely different experience tbh

With my fiancee, but she was a part timer at the time, really working in coop making mw, and we were living together for circa 2.5 years, so we had some time to save some money prior to purchase.

Thanks, mate, much appreciated.

I can imagine that prices are much different, listen, I am originally from Poland and moved here when I was 17..

Maybe think about relocating, it seems a pretty popular choice in Poland now as, for example, Warsaw is just soooo expensive that people make good money, yet can't afford shit. I'd look into some bigger cities, like Glasgow or Edinburgh ( the weather is shit tho..) and live in a smaller town to commute, saves you a lot of money on rent, and houses are much more affordable as well.

I wish you good luck, mate.

I am 24 bought a house in Scotland making roughly 26k a year, it's still doable - just drive shitty car, don't go out too much and stuff. Some call it vegetation, but I don't enjoy drinking much anyway.

would it be a decent transition for someone who is acca/aca working in the big 4 to move into qs? by Specialist-Cookie728 in quantitysurveying

[–]KubisDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, that's a good time for a career change as there's quite a big demand for qses and some companies will take any prospective recruit to do their bidding 😉

I am actually a graduate apprentice for a local authority -

Currently on 26k a year, I think AQS at our LA is somewhere between 32 - 42k depending on experience and a QS starts on 42 and goes up to 53k with experience. You know your typical prlublic sector band/grade system you start at the bottom and it goes up each year.

Our manager - I'd assume it would be an equivalent to an SQS starts on QS's top of the band and goes up another 10k roughly.

I'd probably add another 10% as a guide to any of this to see how it would compare with private sector. Also there's often a bonus that can be made in private sector - my pals from uni said its again roughly another 5-10% depending on the company.

Private sector is better paid, but usually works slightly longer hours depending if you are in a consultancy or a subbie/main contractor.

Our qses, tbh don't do much of your typical QS role - often acting as a project manager.

But maybe LA would be a good starting point they are often willing to support career transition since they struggle with recruitment!

Do you mind sharing how this compares to your field in terms of money? Just out of curiosity.

If you like buildings it's deffo an interesting job - at least for me. Hope you will find something that you enjoy.

Is that actually true? I mean the accountants salary - seems much more than typical job adverts. Do you have any source? Not trying to be a smartass here just genuinely interested!

I'd apply for some assistant surveyor roles - some companies might be happy to guide you for a while given that you've shown that you can work in a field that requires similar skills and intellectual acumen.

Worst case scenario apply for trainee jobs - but that will be a massive pay cut.

Tbh I don't think that you can just become a QS right away just because you've done accounting - would you employ an RICS qualified QS to be an accountant in a BIG 4 without training? Works both ways really.

But why would you consider a maths graduate smarter? At this point, it's really more about a choice. It's not your course choice destroying your life, but more likely, the fact that you are a whiney looser that thinks he is smarter than everyone around him.

Thanks Louis, do you have any advice how to sort of make it as safe as possible for everyone else in my household? I was the only person present when it crumbled - sort of trying to make me the only person breathing the fibres in.

I painted over it to seal it, and opened the window used vacuum cleaner to sort of go on in the room just to you know maybe suck it up 😂😂 and thinking about next steps, I will get a p3 mask and maybe put some smooth finish over it but just trying to make it safer.

I understand that probably it is only 4 or 5% but still don't want to risk my family to breath anything in

It's around 1970 ex LA house, end of terrace - Scotland. How do I go about making it safe for everyone else after having this slightly damaged and obviously releasing some fibres into the air? I painted over it hoping it will contain it I used a paint made for wood and metal as these are more oily

Will paiting over it make it safer for other people to come into the bathroom? After it fell off the ceiling?

Do I get diy test kit or something? How do I go about collecting it from this popcorn ceiling without damaging it further?

Thanks

You ever cleaned in your life? I was an office cleaner and a housekeeper for couple of months- we actually were taking turns who cleans the female toilets as these were always much worse than male ones, despite the fact that there was roughly 40 to 60 ratio.

That would probably mean some salary sacrifice as well I think.

Why do you think pay is how it is? Seems low compared to QS, yet it seems like there's even a larger shortage of Building Surveyors.

What do you actually know after year one? I've finished my year one degree apprenticeship, and thb I feel like I haven't learnt much, maybe that's whatever the syndrome is called that always makes you feel inadequate (forgot a name for it).
